Home Market Releases for January 21st, 2020

Pain & Glory

It’s an odd week for the home market, as there are four wide releases coming out this week, which is more than most weeks. However, none of them were $100 million hits domestically, so it feels slow on top. That said, The Addams Family did come close to that mark and Zombieland: Double Tap was a solid midlevel hit. As for high quality releases, Jay And Silent Bob Reboot will very likely please fans of the franchise, but I’m unsure about its ability draw in newcomers. Finally, the Pain & Glory is the best of the best and only the lack of substantial extras prevents it from winning Pick of the Week with ease. Zombieland: Double Tap has much better extras, so it a contender for Pick of the Week as well. Pain & Glory does win, but it is relatively close.

The Addams Family - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
This is the biggest hit in United Artists latest relaunch. … Let’s face it, it is the only hit in the studio’s latest relaunch. The film’s reviews are mediocre, but not so bad that it isn’t worth checking out if you have kids of the right age. That said, adult fans of the franchise will want to stick with the live-action franchise.

All of My Heart Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This isn’t just one Hallmark Channel original movie. It’s three of them. … Moving on.

Black and Blue - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
A mediocre movie that bombed in theaters and it is being released on Blu-ray with almost no extras. It’s worth a rental, if you like the cast or the genre, but that’s it.

Countdown - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A low-budget horror movie about an app that predicts a person’s death. It’s not a good movie, but there are worse options out there if you are a fan of horror movies.

Jay And Silent Bob Reboot - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This is the first live-action installment in the View Askewniverse in a long time. The film earned good reviews and did spectacular business during its road show, but couldn’t find a mainstream audience when it went to a more traditional limited release. I think this sums up its appeal nicely. Either you’re a super fan of these characters and you will want to buy the Blu-ray, or you just like them and a rental will be enough. Obviously, if you hate these characters, stay away from this movie. It is not for you. Extras include plenty of interviews and outtakes, but not much else.

Pain & Glory

Pain & Glory - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I kind of feel bad for Pedro Almodovar. In most years, this film would be a lock for Best International Film at the Oscars, but this year it is a long shot due to Parasite. It is still clearly the best release on this week’s list and even the lack of substantial extras doesn’t prevent it from being a Pick of the Week contender. It does have some competition.

Zombieland: Double Tap

Zombieland: Double Tap - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
This film isn’t as good as the original was, but is still a fun movie. If you are a fan of horror comedies, then this is certainly worth picking up. The extras are an audio commentary track, six featurettes, and deleted / extended scenes. That’s a lot of extras and certainly helps its overall value rise to the level of a Pick of the Week contender.

TV on DVD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Matlock: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The Mindy Project: The Complete Series - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Matlock is a great show, but the DVDs have had problems with glitches, in fact so many that I would wait on buying this set, just to see if it is a new release, or just the old releases in a new box.

Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations - Set 4 - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Cimarron - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Courier - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Dragonfly - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Gregory’s Girl - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The House By The Cemetery: 3-Disc Limited Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Kitten With A Whip - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The Knight Of Shadows - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Little Monsters - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Monster Musume: Collector’s Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Le Petit Soldat (The Little Soldier): The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Phantom Creeps: 2k Restored Special Edition - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Semi-Tough - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Sliding Doors: Collector’s Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Tobruk: Special Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Ulzana’s Raid: Special Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The War Lord: Special Edition - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
There are a lot of Blu-ray releases with the “Special Edition” label, or something similar, but not all of them look special.

3D Blu-ray Releases - Buy from Amazon:
Yet Another week with no 3D releases, but this is common for 3D going through dry spells like this. However...

4K Ultra HD Releases - Buy from Amazon:
There are no secondary 4K releases either and having no secondary 4K releases for a while is odd. That said...

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon:
Mystify: Michael Hutchence - Reviews - Video on Demand
There is only one secondary VOD release, which is really low. It is a documentary about INXS frontman Michael Hutchence and it is earning 100% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, so fans of the band, artist, and / or rockumentaries in general will want to check it out.
