Theater Averages: Feeling Bad

January 30, 2020

Bad Boys for Life

No film cracked $10,000 on the theater average chart this week. Bad Boys for Life came the closest with an average of $9,010.

The best new limited releases was Panga, which earned an average of $2,801, despite playing on 102 theaters. Color Out of Space was arguably more impressive earning an average of $2,669 in 81 theaters, despite playing on Video on Demand. I assumed that film would open below the Mendoza Line, as most films playing on VOD struggle mightily. Zombi Child barely avoided that fate with an average of $2,017 in three theaters. The Last Full Measure wasn’t as lucky with an average of $1,721 in 614 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Thank You for Everything got to $1 million after a month of release. It won’t get any further, but this is still an impressive run for a foreign-language film.
  • The Last Full Measure also reached $1 million, but that was a lot less impressive, as it opened in 614 theaters.
  • Weathering With You made it all the way to $6 million over the weekend.
  • Jojo Rabbit reached $25 million, thanks in part to its Oscar nominations.
  • Parasite also hit a major milestone, $30 million in this case, and it too benefited from Oscar nominations.
  • Finally, a third major Oscar nominee, 1917, reached $100 million over the weekend. It is not done with milestones.
