Ozark: Season 3

As the movie industry tries to adapt to the the COVID-19 outbreak, we at The Numbers are adapting with them, although it might take another week or so to get our new columns and schedule set, so bear with us in the meantime. Or bare with us, the choice is yours. Starting today, we will have a new weekly column looking at the films and TV shows hitting popular streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, and Amazon Prime. Of the titles on this week’s list. It is The Banker that has my attention the most.

Movies:

The Banker - Reviews - Apple TV
A real-life story of two African-American entrepreneurs in the 1960s, played by Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson. However, since no bank will deal with black men, they hire a white man, Nicholas Hoult, to be the face of their business. This has the kind of star power that has become familiar on Apple TV, and is getting just enough favorable reviews to be the kind of success the platform needs.

Crip Camp - Reviews - Netflix
A Netflix documentary about a 1970s camp for disabled teenagers. Unlike many of the other Netflix releases on this week’s list, this one has reviews. Lots of them. And they are all positive.

A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy - Reviews - Hulu
I was one of the backers of this film’s crowdfunding. It’s a Canadian movie and I felt a patriotic duty to help it. It doesn’t live up to its potential, but it works well enough to stream if you have a Hulu account.

Maska - No Reviews - Netflix
An aspiring actor has to decide between following in his family’s footsteps and run the family cafe, or continue to pursue his dream of acting. There are no reviews, but it is a Netflix film, so there’s no cost for subscribers to at least give it a try.

The Occupant - No Reviews - Netflix
An unemployed executive has to sell his apartment. However, when he realizes he still has a set of keys, he becomes obsessed with getting his old life back, no matter what. Like the previous film, there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, but it is also playing on Netflix, so there’s not much of a risk to check it out if you are already a subscriber.

Uncorked - No Reviews - Netflix
A young man has to decide between following in his family’s footsteps and run the family BBQ, or continue to pursue his dream of becoming a sommelier. This is very similar to Maska, right down to the lack of reviews, but again, it is a Netflix film, so there’s no cost for subscribers to at least give it a try.

A Wrinkle in Time - Reviews - Disney+
This film failed to meet expectations, both with critics and in theaters. That said, it isn’t a bad movie for its target audience, younger girls, who are likely to connect with the lead character more and appreciate the wilder aesthetic choices.

TV Shows:

Be Our Chef: Season One - No Reviews - Disney+
A reality TV show on Disney+ featuring five families in a cooking competition. It doesn’t start until Friday, so there are no reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. I couldn’t even find a page of Rotten Tomatoes, which is more troubling.

Dragons: Rescue Riders: Hunt for the Golden Dragon - No Reviews - Netflix
The latest spin-off from the How to Train Your Dragon franchise.

Ladies Up - No Reviews - Netflix
A stand-up comedy series featuring four India-based stand-up comics.

Making the Cut: Season One - Reviews - Amazon Prime
A reality TV show from Amazon Prime about the world of fashion. I’m not actually interested in fashion or reality TV, so it is impossible for me to judge the quality of the show, but the early reviews are mixed.

The Mire: Season One - No Reviews - Netflix
A Polish crime drama that starts with the bodies of a prostitute and a youth worker being found. However, a pair of investigative journalists are suspicious of the cops investigating the murders. I couldn’t even find a page for the TV show on Rotten Tomatoes, so this one could definitely slip between the cracks.

Ozark: Season Three - Reviews - Netflix
The list of TV shows ends with the biggest release. And if the reviews are to be trusted, also the best. It would be a significant surprise if this doesn’t top Netflix’ chart this weekend.
