VOD Releases: Are Audiences Hungry for a Family Film on VOD?

May 14, 2020

Scoob!

We only have a short list of VOD releases this week, but one of them is Scoob!, which Warner Bros. originally planned to release theatrically. Perhaps we’ll have another VOD hit on our hands this weekend?

Highlights:

Ovid and the Art of Love - No Reviews
iTunes
A modern retelling of the real-life tale of Ovid, a poet in ancient Rome. The film is set in modern day Detroit while still using a lot of ancient Roman elements. It certainly has style going for it and if the reviews are good, then it could find a small, but appreciative, audience. Unfortunately, there are no reviews at the moment and I fear it will slip between the cracks.

Proximity - Reviews
Amazon
A faith-based sci-fi film about a NASA scientist who was abducted by aliens. I’m not part of the target audience here, but I am intrigued. Granted, the reviews are mixed and a lot of critics are comparing it to Spielberg in a very negative way. In other words, it is being called a cheap Spielberg knock-off. Even if you are in the target audience, it is probably wise to wait for a rental, while it could have more crossover appeal than most faith-base films have.

Scoob! - No Reviews
Amazon VOD, Amazon VOD 4K UHD, iTunes, or Google Play
This film was supposed to be a major theatrical release and the start of a new cinematic universe. However, instead of pushing the release back, Warner Bros. is releasing it on VOD this week. Either the studio looked at the final product and said, “Eww!” or they looked at the money Trolls World Tour earned and got jealous. Unfortunately, this film still has no reviews, so it is impossible to say which end of that scale is more likely, but I still suspect it will be the top film on VOD this weekend. If it is as big of a hit as Trolls World Tour, then it could still be the start of a cinematic universe.
