Streaming Releases: Will Hamilton Help Disney+’s Choir Grow?

July 3, 2020

Hamilton

Hamilton arrived on Disney+ today. This movie is getting so much hype that it is selling subscriptions to the service. Furthermore, its early reviews are living up to expectations. I’m personally more excited about My Cousin Vinny coming out on Hulu. The other two releases that have caught my attention are Homemade: Season One and Warrior Nun: Season One, both on Netflix.

Movies

Desperados
Netflix
This rom com is earning terrible reviews, with most critics saying it is predictable, unfunny, and has a gross streak to it. Even the few positive reviews are unenthusiastic.

George Lopez: We’ll Do It For Half
Netflix
George Lopez has been doing stand-up for nearly 40 years and it shows. This is both a good thing and a bad thing. On the positive side, this special is very polished and his timing is impeccable. On the negative side, there’s nothing here that will truly surprise those who have been following his career.

Hamilton
Disney+
This is one of the most critically-acclaimed musicals of past decade or so and the filmed version is being praised just as much as the stage musical was. This will not only be one of the most-watched releases of the week, it could help convince a lot of people that Disney+ is worth the money.

My Cousin Vinny
Hulu
This is one of my favorite comedies of all time and I would be really happy about its coming to Hulu on the first of this month, except for two things. Firstly, I’m Canadian and Hulu isn’t available in Canada yet. Secondly, I own the movie on Blu-ray. In fact, I watched it on Blu-ray just last month.

Other Movies

The F**k-It List - Netflix
The Hater - Netflix
Jim Jefferies: Intolerant - Netflix
Thiago Ventura: POKAS - Netflix
Under the Riccione Sun - Netflix

TV Shows:

Cable Girls: Season Five, Part B
Netflix
This Spanish TV show is developing quite an audience on Netflix, which is rare for a foreign import.

Hanna: Season Two
Amazon
The second season of the Hanna spin-off is doing well with critics, mostly. Season two is a very difficult season to judge by the reviews, as the percent of positive reviews tends to go up, but the number of reviews tends to drop. If you liked the first season, you will almost certainly like the second one.

Homemade: Season One
Netflix
A whole bunch of celebrities create a whole lot of short films while in lockdown due to COVID-19. At least something good is coming from this.

Ju-On: Origins - Season One
Netflix
A TV series based on the J-horror films. The reviews are fine. It’s nothing special, but fans of these movies will probably want to check it out.

Warrior Nun: Season One
Netflix
People are calling this a modern-day Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That sets up really high expectations. However, early reviews suggests the show lives up to them. Mostly. While the reviews are overwhelmingly positive, they are not too enthusiastic in their praise. That said, TV shows do sometimes take a while to get going, as you have to spend a lot of time introducing the characters and creating the world. The first season is very rarely the best and when it is, that’s usually a really bad sign.

Other TV Shows:

The Baby-Sitters Club - Netflix
Chico Bon Bon: Monkey with a Tool Belt Season Two - Netflix
Deadwind: Season Two - Netflix
Transformers: War for Cybertron Trilogy - Netflix
Unsolved Mysteries: Season One - Netflix
