New on Disc: Bruce Lee Fights its Way to the Top

Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits

It is a deceptively slow week for DVDs and Blu-rays, with only five major new releases. However, while there are few releases compared to historical norms, and none of them are poised to be massive hits on the home market, all five are worth picking up and two are contenders for Pick of the Week. Those are from Criterion Collection: Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits (Blu-ray) and The Lady Eve (Blu-ray). Both are worthy contenders, but while I went with the Bruce Lee box set, its price might scare away some potential customers.

Highlights

Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits

Bruce Lee: His Greatest Hits: Criterion Collection - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
$100. This five-movie, seven-disc box set costs $100. But that’s really the only caveat here. A couple of films are only relatively good for a martial arts movie of its era, but the other three are classics of the genre. Additionally, there are tons of extras in this box set, including a solid mix of new and old extras. This includes six audio commentary tracks, Game of Death II, tons of interviews, and more. It is easily worth picking up, and even with that price-tag it is a Pick of the Week contender.

Clueless: 25th Anniversary Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
This would be a Pick of the Week contender, if there hadn’t been a nearly identical release on Blu-ray before. There appears to be one new featurette, but that’s it. It is a great movie and if you don’t already own it, then you should pick it up. However, it isn’t worth the double-dip, or triple-dip at this point.

Inuyasha: Set 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
This anime came out 20 years ago. It is about a modern Japanese girl who gets dragged into the past by a demon looking for a powerful gem. She then has to team up with a group of warriors from the past to prevent demons from collecting its scattered pieces. It isn’t a particularly unique story, but it is extremely well done and won awards when it first came out. There are not a lot of extras on the Blu-ray, just an interview featurette and clean opening and closing animations. That said, this is still enough to be worth picking up.

The Lady Eve

The Lady Eve: The Criterion Collection - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
The second Pick of the Week contender of the week is also a Criterion Collection release. This is a con-artist movie in which a card shark, Barbara Stanwyck, schemes to marry a rich heir, Henry Fonda. The film is an absolute classic and the screenplay was even nominated for an Oscar. On the downside, the only thing new for this release is the 4K restoration. That said, it is still worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

The Magicians: Season Five - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
The Magicians: The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray
I watched the first season of this series because Olivia Taylor Dudley from 5SFs was in it; however, while I liked the show, this was around the same time I cut cable completely, so I stopped watching it. The reviews have been very positive, but a little uneven at times. Additionally, they stopped including extras after season three. That said, if you have been collecting the show since the beginning, it went out on a positive note, so season five is worth picking up. And if you liked the show, but didn’t grab the individual Blu-rays, the box set is a good deal.

In my opinion, the Animation Outlaws Blu-ray is the best of the smaller releases and it isn’t selling nearly as well as it should be. Anyone who likes animation, especially short form animation, should know who Spike and Mike are and should pick up this Blu-ray.

TV on DVD Releases

12 Monkeys: The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray
Legion of Super Heroes: The Complete Series - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Love in the Sun - Buy from Amazon: DVD

Legion of Super Heroes is the best-selling TV on DVD release this week. 12 Monkeys is arguably the best.
