Theater counts: Lightyear buzzes into theaters, but Dominion remains widest release

With Spring nearing an end and Summer upon us, big things are happening at theaters across North America. With the number one and number two films at the box office also holding two of the three top positions of widest release ever, each week seems to possess a new and exciting release. This week is no exception as Lightyear arrives in theaters. The sci-fi action-adventure film directed by Angus MacLane charts the origin story for Buzz Lightyear, the action figure in the popular Toy Story films. Starring Chris Evans as the titular character, Lightyear debuts in 4,255 locations including IMAX screens throughout the United States and Canada.

Making its sophomore outing this week, Jurassic World: Dominion adds 23 theaters for a count of 4,697 theaters, making it the widest release for the second consecutive week. The latest Jurassic feature snagged just over $145 million domestically in its opening weekend and has gone on to collect $182 million in its first six days. Meanwhile, entering its fourth week, Top Gun: Maverick is still flying high as it crossed the $400 million mark on Monday and currently sits with a domestic total of $416 million after 20 days of release. Maverick is available in 4,035 locations this weekend. Also crossing the $400 million threshold and currently sitting at $935 million worldwide is this week’s fourth-widest release, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, playing in 2,465 theaters. Rounding out the top five this week is The Bad Guys in 1,477 cinemas.

Once again there is no scarcity of films showing in limited release this week. The largest of these, Brian and Charles follows a lonely inventor in rural Wales who creates Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English and is obsessed with cabbages. The comedy starring David Earl and Chris Hayward opens in 279 locations. Also debuting this week is the Indian film Nikamma, with Sony Pictures releasing the Hindi language film in 170 locations this week. Other films hitting theaters this week include Bitterbrush, The Book Keepers, and Official Competition; with the latter playing in four locations.

Looking ahead to next week we see two wide releases make their way to the big screen by way of Elvis and The Black Phone.
