Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One

In a rare mid-week opening, the top movie in the land is another blockbuster from legendary actor Tom Cruise. The latest Mission: Impossible feature, Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Part One scored $15.52 million on Wednesday (inclusive of $7 million in Tuesday previews — $1 million more from previews than its predecessor, Mission: Impossible — Fallout). The Christopher McQuarrie directed movie will add 278 theaters starting Friday, making itself available in 4,327 locations which includes standard and IMAX screens.

While no other film poses any real challenge to Dead Reckoning, there are nevertheless plenty of opportunities to see some exciting movies on the big screen. After showing in 4,600 cinemas the past two weeks, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny drops 735 theaters this week, but still available in a solid 3,865 venues. The third-widest release this week is the surprise hit from Angel Studios in Sound of Freedom, which has consistently been battling out at the box office for the number one spot since its debut on July 4th. This week the true-life drama adds 413 sites, now showing in 3,265 locations. Rounding out the top five this week is Elemental, and last week’s newcomer, Insidious: The Red Door, clocking in with 3,235 and 3,188 theaters respectively.

A wide array of limited releases make their way into theaters this week as well, including the Japanese anime-crime film, Psycho-Pass Providence. The sci-fi thriller from Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures is set to debut in 419 theaters. Also opening this week is Canadian hockey documentary, Black Ice. Arriving in 144 locations, the film navigates the challenges, triumphs, and unique experiences faced by athletes through firsthand accounts from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) hockey players past, and present. Lastly, playing in six venues this week is the comedy, Theater Camp, which expands to 50 theaters next week.

Looking ahead to next week, we see two films affectionately billed as “Barbenheimer” open in theaters. The two blockbuster features couldn’t be more different (one, a modern take on a classic child’s toy, while the other covers the father of the atomic bomb). Barbie, the fun-filled comedy-adventure starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling will begin its run in approximately 4,100 cinemas, while the Christopher Nolan directed Oppenheimer is expected to land in approximately 3,600 theaters.
