Synopsis

Intercutting a graphically bold animation style with interviews and archival footage, the film conveys a rare immediacy as it tells of the outbreak of civil war following Angola’s independence from Portugal in 1975. Against all advice, Kapuściński is intent on driving south into the heart of the bloody conflict to find the isolated rebel leader Farrusco. His animated trip through corpse-strewn roads conveys an undeniable urgency, while the documentary testimony reminds us that we are watching actual history.

In fact, there are five contenders for Pick of the Week and a couple of other smaller releases that might end up in my collection soon. It is going to be a rough week on my wallet. These include a couple of Oscar contenders, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood and Jojo Rabbit; a couple of animated releases, The Point! and Tex Avery: Screwball Classics: Volume 1; and a TV on DVD Megaset, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: The Complete Series. All five releases are worth picking up, but I’m going with Jojo Rabbit as this week’s Pick of the Week. More...

The final film in the $10,000 club was Hustlers, which barely got there earning an average of $10,210 in 3,250 theaters. More...

Limited and VOD Releases: Will Monos Thrive, or will Fate Hand it a Loss?

September 13th, 2019

Monos

There are many interesting limited releases on this week’s list I want to check out, including Chained for Life, Freaks, Neither Wolf Nor Dog, One Cut of the Dead, Riot Girls, and Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken. However, I think Monos has the best shot at box office success. More...
