Synopsis

An eccentric mountain man is on the run from the authorities, surviving the winter by breaking into empty vacation homes in a remote community. Regularly calling into radio talk shows — where he has acquired the nickname “Buster”—to rant about the impending Inversion at the turn of the millennium, he is haunted by visions of being lost at sea, and memories of his former life as a family man. Buster was once Jonah, a hard-working husband and father whose job as the night-shift concierge at a hotel took its toll on his psyche and, consequently, his marriage to the sensitive Marty—until a chance encounter with a conspiracy-obsessed drifter changed the course of their lives forever. As the solitary present day Buster drifts from house to house, eluding the local sheriff at every turn, we gradually piece together the events that fractured his life and left him alone on top of a snowy mountain, or perhaps in a small rowboat in the middle of a vast ocean—or both, in this visceral mind bender that will provoke discussion long after it turns your world upside-down.

Stalker

Last week, The Fate of the Furious scared away all of the competition. This week, the competition is still scared, as there’s very little in the way of top notch releases. Kong: Skull Island is by far the biggest new release of the week, while the next two biggest are The Promise and Free Fire. As for the best releases of the week, The Expanse: Season Two is a contender, but ultimately the Pick of the Week goes to the Stalker Criterion Collection Blu-ray. More...

Theater Averages: Baahubali Won’t Conclude after a $24,712 opening

May 2nd, 2017

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion

Baahubali 2: The Conclusion opened on top of the theater average chart with $24,712 in just over 400 theaters. It goes without saying that there will be another installment in this franchise; although I hear it won’t follow the same characters. The only other film in the $10,000 club was How to Be a Latin Lover, which earned an average of $10,959 in 1,118 theaters. Obit was relatively close to the $10,000 mark with an average of $8,093 in two theaters over the weekend; however, it was a Wednesday release earning an average of $17,604 over the five days. Weekend Estimates: Niche Audiences to the Fore at Home, Guardians Big Overseas

April 30th, 2017

How to Be a Latin Lover

The last weekend before the Summer season is generally a quiet one, but two breakout hits aimed at niche audiences are making this one interesting. How to Be a Latin Lover will post a shade over $12 million from just 1,118 theaters, according to Lionsgate’s weekend estimate. That would be the news of the weekend if it wasn’t for Baahubali 2: The Conclusion earning the best weekend for a Bollywood movie in history with a stellar $10.1 million from just 425 locations. Those two films couldn’t knock The Fate of the Furious off top spot though, as the action blockbuster added another $19.4 million, to take its domestic total to $192.7 million. More...

Harold and Lilian: A Hollywood Love Story

It is not a good week for limited releases. Only two of the films on this week’s list are earning any level of buzz, Below Her Mouth and Rupture. However, both are earning bad reviews and are playing on VOD, so their box office chances are nearly zero. There are a couple of documentaries earning 100% positive reviews at the moment, Bang! The Bert Berns Story and Harold and Lilian: A Hollywood Love Story. If you like roc ‘n’ roll, check out the former. If you are a cinephile or if you are a regular on this site, then check out the latter. More...
