DVD and Blu-ray Releases for January 12th, 2010

January 11th, 2010

As it is usually true at this time of year, there are very few major releases hitting the home market this week. Most of the films on this week's list that opened wide were critics and / or box office disappointments, but at least there are a number of smaller films to pick up the slack. This includes Big Fan, which features what should be a star making performance by Patton Oswald, but the DVD isn't exactly loaded with extras. That's not an issue with Moon, as both the DVD and the Blu-ray are loaded with extras. The best release of the week is arguably The Hurt Locker and both its DVD and Blu-ray are Pick of the Week material. However, it is likely that it will be joined by Transformers - Season 2 - Volume 2, once the screener arrives. More...

Truly Precious on the Per Theater Chart

November 10th, 2009

Precious had a record-breaking opening on the per theater chart with close to $1.9 million in just 18 theaters for an average of $104,025. This is just shy of the record for best per theater average for a live action movie; however, the current record holder, Dreamgirls, opened in fewer theaters and with prestige pricing, so this is arguably the better result. Precious did set the record for highest per theater average for a film playing in more than 10 theaters.

It wasn't the only film in the $10,000 club with La Danse earning $14,000 in its lone theater while Splinterheads opened with $10,515, also in one theater. More...

G.I. Joe Dominates Per Theater Chart

August 11th, 2009

Not only did G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra win the race to the top of the overall box office chart, it was also the only film to crack the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart. Its average of $13,654 was about 50% more than the second place film, Cold Souls, which opened with an average of $9,043 in 7 theaters. More...

Per Theater Chart is In the Loop

July 28th, 2009

In the Loop lead the way on the per theater chart with an impressive average of $23,983, and with its reviews, it should be able to expand significantly. (500) Days of Summer landed in second place with an average of $19,244, which is about a third less than its opening weekend average. But it is now playing in 85 theaters, which is more than triple its opening weekend theater count, so this is a fantastic hold. Those were the only films to top $10,000 on the per theater chart, but The Ugly Truth came relatively close with $9,579. More...

Summer's Hot on the Per Theater Chart

July 21st, 2009

(500) Days of Summer led the way on the per theater chart with an outstanding average of $30,907, which was nearly twice as much as the second placed film. That honor went to the overall box office champion film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, which earned an average of $17,997. Alien Trespass skyrocketed into third place with $14,405 in one theater thanks to special screenings at the Fantasia Montreal Film Festival. The final film to reach the $10,000 mark was A Woman in Berlin with $12,439, also in one theater. More...

Life's a Beach on the Per Theater Chart

July 14th, 2009

There was a mix of old and new on the top of the Per Theater Chart this week with Humpday opening in first place with an average of $14,369. The Beaches of Agnes was in second place with $13,584 in one theater during its second weekend of release. The overall box office leader, Brüno, was in third place with $11,110. Meanwhile, last week's per theater champ, The Hurt Locker, just managed to remain in the $10,000 club with $10,686, but it also expanded significantly, which makes this achievement even more impressive. Food Soars Past the Moon on the Per Theater Chart

June 16th, 2009

There were half-a-dozen films that managed to reach the $10,000 mark on the per theater chart, led by Food, Inc. with an impressive average of $20,171 in three theaters. This suggests at least some potential for expansion. Moon opened in a few more theaters while its average was slightly below at $17,006, but this is also enough to suggest some potential for expansion. Tetro opened on Thursday and earned nearly $40,000 over 4 days, but over the three-day weekend it managed an average of $16,221. Away We Go expanded from 4 to 45 theaters, but still earned an average of $12,463, and this is very good news indeed. Youssou N'Dour: I Bring What I Love opened with an average of $10,866 in three theaters while Le Combat Dans l'Ile opened with $10,217 in one. The overall box office champion, The Hangover, came awfully close to the $10,000 mark with an average of $9,775. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of June 12th, 2009

June 13th, 2009

Terrible week more movie site with two movies without a site I could find, two more that either had too many dead links or crashed my browser, and a couple others with just the bare minimum, or less. None jump up as worth of the Weekly Website Award, but I think I was most pleasantly surprised by Moon's Official Site. More...

Limited Releases, Inc.

June 12th, 2009

There are nine limited releases on this week's list, but only a couple that are earning overwhelmingly positive reviews. Of those two film, Food, Inc. and Moon, none of sure things for box office success. Summer is still rather slow for independent films. More...
