Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

Full financial estimates for this film, including domestic and international box office, video sales, video rentals, TV and ancillary revenue are available through our research services. For more information, please contact us at research@the-numbers.com.

International Details - An Interesting Proposal

September 12th, 2009

The Proposal had massive gains this past weekend and just failed to reach the top five with $5.83 million on 2160 screens in 42 markets for a total of $124.60 million internationally and $285.57 million worldwide. It is now the biggest worldwide hit for Sandra Bullock, and it still has a chance to overtake Speed internationally. This week it debuted in third place in Italy with $1.43 million on 354 screens over the weekend for a total of $1.86 million during its opening, which is much weaker than its performance here. It has yet to open in France, which is key in its quest to overtake Speed, but even if it bombs there and in Japan, it will still hit $300 million worldwide. More...

DVD Rentals - Not a Fast Week for New Releases

August 13th, 2009

While there were five new releases to reach the top 30 on the rental chart this week, only one of them reached the top ten. That new release was Fast and Furious, which placed first with roughly two thirds more rentals than Watchmen. More...

DVD Sales - People were Watching New Releases

August 5th, 2009

This was arguably the best week for new releases since summer began with eight reaching the top 30, including two new releases that finished first and second. Number one was Watchmen with 1.23 million units sold generating $25.60 million in sales. More...

DVD Rentals - Watching Watchmen and Coraline and the Rest of the New Releases

August 5th, 2009

New releases were not as plentiful on the rental chart as they were on the sales chart, mainly due to the fact that TV on DVD dominated the lower half of sales. The top two films were the same with Watchmen opening in first place with roughly 50% more rentals than Coraline had. More...

DVD Sales - New Releases Haunt Sales Chart

July 30th, 2009

There were not a lot of new releases to chart this week, and only one of them made it into the top five. However, that one film was A Haunting in Connecticut, which earned first place earning $8.76 million on 439,000 units sold. More...

DVD Rentals - Nothing Knew On top of the Rental Chart

July 30th, 2009

Firstly, that pun in the headline is so bad I caused my physical pain when I wrote it. But as it implies, none of the new releases were able to topple Knowing leaving the DVD in top spot on the rental chart. More...

International Details - Harry Leaves Competition in the Cold

July 26th, 2009

Ice Age - Dawn of the Dinosaurs was pushed into second place by The Half-Blood Prince, but it became the biggest international hit of the year topping Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen. Over the weekend the film added $61.90 million on 11,089 screens in 102 markets for a total of $430.88 million internationally and $582.75 million Worldwide. It is possible that the film is already the biggest his in the franchise, but we won't know for sure till this weekend's numbers are released. More...

DVD Sales - Well Known

July 23rd, 2009

Sales picked up this week with the release of Knowing and a few other new releases that topped the sales chart this week. Knowing led the way with respectable sales of 773,000 units and $12.51 million in consumer spending at retail. More...

DVD Rentals - Getting to Know Knowing

July 23rd, 2009

The same three new releases that topped the sales chart this week also topped the rental charts, and they finished in the same order. Knowing opened in first place with more than Push and The Unborn made combined. More...

International Details - New Number One for the Year

July 19th, 2009

Transformers - Revenge of the Fallen became the biggest hit of the year on the international scene, at least for a little while. Over the weekend it added $34.27 million on 8210 screens in 62 markets for a total of $371.24 million internationally and $710.46 million worldwide. It has overtaken Angels and Demons for the biggest international hit of 2009, for the time being, while it is just ahead of the original's worldwide total. More...

DVD Releases for July 7th, 2009

July 6th, 2009

This is a slow week. Even compared to the recent slow weeks we've encountered, this is a slow week. There are a few first run releases on this week's list, but the best of them earned weak reviews and was only a mid-level hit at the box office. The best release overall is Mystery Science Theater 3000 - Volume 15, but it is a bit of a niche market release, and I'm hesitant to award it the DVD Pick of the Week. More...

International Details - Wolverine is Cut Down, but Still Fighting Hard

May 17th, 2009

Wolverine was pushed into second place on the international chart with $28.95 million on 8982 screens in 93 markets for a total of $121.58 million. This was a 60% drop-off, but that was better than it was domestically, and it appears $300 million worldwide is a sure bet. The film was pushed into third place in the U.K., but still managed a healthy $3.39 million on 484 screens over the weekend for a total of $18.47 million. It remained in first place in France with $3.95 million on 700 screens, but that was for the full week giving the film $11.80 million after two. It also finished in first place in Brazil with $2.11 million on 609 screens over the weekend for a total of $7.81 million after two. Next up for the film is Mexico, where it opens at the end of May, while it ends its run in Japan in August. More...

International Details - Hannah Strikes a Chord

May 10th, 2009

We've entered the summer schedule and this year there will be a small change. Instead of dealing with just the films that have reached $1 million or more on the international chart, we will be dealing with just the films that have reached $2 million or more. The reason for this change is simple; with the rise of many midlevel markets, reaching $1 million is just not that big of a feat anymore. The best of the rest of this week's selection was Hannah Montana the Movie, which placed a healthy second with $6.95 million on 1300 screens in 13 markets for a very early total of $8.96 million. This includes second place openings in the U.K. with $3.03 million on 415 screens in the U.K., which was as expected, and $1.44 million on 346 screens over the weekend in Italy and $1.64 million in total, which was better than expected. Also, it is about a week away from topping $1 million in Poland after earning $124,000 on 105 screens over the weekend giving it $932,000 after three. Combined with the nearly $75 million the movie has earned domestically, and this film is very, very close to showing a profit before the lucrative home market. More...

International Top Five - Furious Still Running Fast

April 29th, 2009

Fast and Furious took another victory lap on top of the international box office with $15.91 million on 6333 screens in 58 markets for a total of $170.94 million. This includes a first place finish in Italy; there the film topped the charts with ease, despite falling nearly 60% to $2.10 million on 422 screens over the weekend, while it has made $8.81 million after two. It fell even further in Australia down 62%, but it still managed to repeat on top with $2.17 million on 345 screens over the weekend for a total of $9.68 million. These large collapses during the film's second weekend of release are far too common during its international run; however, with $316.31 million worldwide, the movie is a smash hit, no matter how you look at it. More...

International Top Five - Fast Furriest of Them All

April 22nd, 2009

Fast and Furious remained in top shot with $34.65 million on 6361 screens in 57 markets for a total of $143.81 million internationally and $280.02 million worldwide. In Italy, the film opened in first place with $5.04 million on 414 screens over the weekend and $5.14 million in total while it managed the same feat in Australia with $5.69 million on 345 screens over the weekend and $5.88 million in total. It also placed first during its debut in China, but no box office numbers were released. The film fell more than 60% in the U.K. adding $2.82 million on 385 screens over the weekend for a total of $14.97 million after two. In Russia it performed even worse down 75% to $2.14 million on 696 screens over the weekend for a total of $12.48 million. More...

International Details - Unknown Success

April 19th, 2009

Knowing was able to sneak into third place, despite earlier reports to the contrary. Over the past weekend it earned $13.35 million on 2943 screens in 24 markets for a total of $47.80 million. The film opened in a number of smaller markets, but most of the growth came from two major markets: Germany and Spain. In the former it made $1.47 million on 440 screens, while in the latter it made a more impressive $2.35 million on 330 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.11 million. As far as holdovers are concerned, the film held steady in France down just 16% to $3.06 million on 348 screens, but that was for the full week. After two weeks the film now has $6.72 million in that market. More...

Fangirls Put Hannah on Top

April 14th, 2009

Records fell over Easter weekend, as the overall box office pulled in $133 million, which was the best ever for an Easter Weekend. It was 14% lower that last weekend when Fast and Furious beat records. On the other hand, it was it was 15% higher that last Easter and 41% higher than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has earned $2.57 billion, which is 14.3% higher than the 2008's pace. More...

International Top Five - Monsters Fight Their Way to the Top

April 9th, 2009

Monsters vs. Aliens expanded practically worldwide over the weekend climbing into first place with $33.47 million on 7707 screens in 49 markets for a still early total of $46.90 million. It opened in most major markets scoring first place in the U.K. with $6.47 million on 520 screens, as well as in Italy with $2.86 on 496 and in Australia with $2.77 million on 382. It finished in second place in Spain with $2.82 million on 538 screens and in Mexico with $2.00 million on 539 screens over the weekend for a total of $3.06 million. On the other hand, it struggled in France landing in third place with $2.15 million on 790 screens and was even weaker in Germany earning fifth place with $1.40 million on 699. In both markets its per screen average was well below expectations and dragged down its overall per screen average. Perhaps the films the movie is spoofing are just not well known enough to draw in audiences overseas. Or perhaps there are not enough 3-D theaters overseas to give its overall box office a big enough boost. Regardless, the film should reach $100 million internationally, which will be enough to give the film a profit, assuming the price tag was not completely irrational. More...

Zero to Seventy is Three Days

April 7th, 2009

Fast and Furious broke records over the weekend and helped take the overall box office to $155 million. That's 6% more than last weekend, and 62% than the same weekend last year. Stunning. Overall, 2009 has managed $2.57 billion, which is 14% ahead of last year's pace. More...

Fast Start or Furious Filmmakers?

April 2nd, 2009

April starts off with what could be one of the biggest openings of the year, as well as one of the best reviewed movies of the year. Sadly, these are two separate movies. Even if the top film misses expectations, it should still earn more than the combined total of last year's set of wide releases, and help 2009 maintain its record setting pace. More...

International Top Five - Slum Comes Out On Top in Crowded Race

April 1st, 2009

Slumdog Millionaire returned to first place on the international chart with $9.59 million on 3123 screens in 52 markets for a total of $170.31 million internationally and $309.86 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in China with $2.93 million on just over 400 screens, which is the best opening for a non-American foreign film for the past decade. It also showed no signs of declining in Germany, where it added $2.37 million on 270 screens during its second weekend, which was nearly identical to its opening, and it now has a total of $5.54 million. More...

Monsters Take Down All Competition

March 31st, 2009

It was an amazing weekend at the box office as all six films on this list beat expectations. Granted, some times that was by the smallest of margins, but after two down weeks in a row we will take all the good news we can. Speaking of good news, the overall box office shot up by 39% from last weekend to $146 million. More importantly, that was 38% more than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date, 2009 has now pulled in $2.38 billion, which is 12% higher than last year's pace. With April of '08 starting slowly, we have a great chance to extend the lead this coming weekend. More...

International Details - Watchmen Slowing Down

March 29th, 2009

Watchmen fell out of the top five with $6.35 million on 4965 screens in 53 markets for a total of $60.63 million. Unless it is a big hit in Japan over the weekend, $100 million internationally is likely out of the question, as is $200 million worldwide. Depending on how much it costs to advertise, it could still make enough to show a profit, but it could take quite a bit longer than the studio would have liked. More...

Monsters vs. Everyone Else

March 26th, 2009

It's a one-horse race for top spot at the box office with Monsters vs. Aliens being that one horse. However, while there's no real race for the top this weekend, it will be interesting to see if the film can top last year's big spring release, Horton Hears a Who. Or if it can top The Watchmen for best opening weekend of the year. Or, most importantly, if it can help 2009 regain its winning ways over 2008. That shouldn't be too hard, as this week last year wasn't particularly strong. More...

In the Know

March 24th, 2009

It was a relatively predictable weekend at the box office with all five films finishing in the right order and within an acceptable margin of error. The main difference was the top three films were more spread out than expected, which gave Knowing a much easier win. Overall, the box office pulled in $105 million, which was 4.5% higher than last weekend, but as expected, it was 6.6% lower than the same weekend last year. Year-to-date 2009 has pulled in $2.20 billion, which is 12% higher than last year's pace. More...

Weekend Estimates: Knowing Wins Weekend Face-Off

March 22nd, 2009

A fascinating box office face-off ended in a good win for Knowing over the weekend as the Nicolas Cage thriller earned $24.814 million, according to Summit's Sunday estimate, and topped the latest from Paul Rudd and Julia Roberts. Rudd's comedy, I Love You, Man did a decent $18 million, while Roberts' Duplicity was a little more disappointing with an estimated $14.4 million. More...

Movie Website Reviews for the Weekend of March 20th, 2009

March 21st, 2009

If I were to use just one word to describe the sites on this week's list, that would would be 'solid'. Most of the sites on this list have all of the usual features, while a few has some minor extras. But none have what it takes to be the winner of the Weekly Website Award. More...

Who Knows Who Will Win at the Box Office?

March 19th, 2009

There could be quite a race for top spot on top of the weekend box office with all three wide releases with a shot at coming out on top. Knowing, I Love You, Man, and Duplicity all have their strengths, and weaknesses, and this has led to analysts being divided on which movie will win. They are less divided on the chances they will keep up with last year's number one film, and it appears it will be another losing weekend for 2009. However, that should change next weekend. More...

Contest - All Knowing

March 13th, 2009

Only one saturation level release next week, Knowing, and it is the target film for this week's box office prediction contest. A movie about predictions being the target of a box office prediction game. Delicious. In order to win, one must simply predict the opening weekend box office of Knowing. Whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going over, will win a copy of SpongeBob SquarePants - SpongeBob vs. the Big One on DVD, as well as The Hills - Season Four on DVD and Stiletto on DVD. Meanwhile, whoever comes the closest to predicting the film's opening 3-day weekend box office (Friday to Sunday), without going under, will also win a copy of The Hills - Season Four on DVD and Stiletto on DVD. Finally, one additional entrant will be chosen and they will win a third copy of Stiletto on DVD. Entries must be received by 10 a.m., Pacific Time on Friday to be eligible, so don't delay! More...

2009 Preview: March

March 1st, 2009

2009 got off to such a great start that I didn't think February would continue winning, but so far that has proven to be the case, for the most part. Now March has a great chance of continuing that run with several big hits, including three potential $100 million movies. At the beginning of the year, I didn't think there would be so many hits in March, but a high tide lifts all boats, and the more people see movies, the more trailers they see in theaters, and the more likely they are to watch the upcoming movies.
