Notes and Reactions...

  • Lincoln led the way with seven nominations and has to be seen as the big Oscar favorite at this point, as it has everything going for it. It's the right type of film to win Oscars, its reviews are excellent, its pedigree is incredible, its made enough money at the box office to be noticed by voters, and now it is earning plenty of award nominations.
  • After being shut out yesterday, Django Unchained roared back today, but something tells me it isn't a favorite to win any of the awards it was nominated for.
  • The biggest film at the SAGs yesterday was The Silver Linings Playbook and it did well today as well with four nods and it should at least match that at the Oscars.
  • Golden Globes split the movie category into Drama and Comedy or Musical categories, and most years its the Drama category that dominates Best Picture Oscar nominations. This year all five nominees could repeat at the Oscars. However, because Oscars have returned to up to ten nominees, four of the five Comedy or Musical nominees also have a shot at the big prize and at least two have better than 50/50 chances of earning nominations. (Only Salmon Fishing in the Yemen is too much of a long shot.)
  • Les Miserables did well, but not as well as some were expecting, as it didn't pick up a Best Director nomination.
  • On the other hand, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen did much better than expected. Three nominations was three more than I was expecting.
  • Some thought Matthew McConaughey would earn a nomination for Magic Mike. Really? I don't care how good his performance was, a film about male strippers is going to be a long shot during Awards Season. At least that's my opinion based on years of paying attention to Awards Season trends. After all, there were several films that earned more than 90% positive reviews that won't get even a glance during Awards Season, not until the Oscars announce the nominees for the technical categories.
