An Inconvenient Sequel

This weekend’s winner on the theater average chart is an unusual one. It is rare for documentaries to get a sequel and it is rare for documentaries to land in first place on the theater average chart. An Inconvenient Sequel opened with an average of $31,206 in four theaters, which is a good sign going forward. Menashe looks like it will be another success for A24, as it earned an average of $20,693 in three theaters. Detroit is planning to expand wide on Friday, so its average of $17,510 in 20 theaters is a good start. Brigsby Bear was the final film in the $10,000 club earning an average of $13,217 in three theaters.

None of the rest of the new limited releases came close to the $10,000 mark. Rumble: The Indians who Rocked the World was the best of the rest earning an average of $4,457 in two theaters over the weekend. Wolf Warriors 2 was next with an average of $4,132 in over 50 theaters. This isn’t bad, given the number of theaters it was playing in. Person to Person was close behind with an average of $3,951 in three theaters. Mubarakan was the widest limited release of the week playing in 128 theaters, but it only managed an average of $2,423. From the Land of the Moon earned an average of $2,237 in two theaters.

Three films missed the Mendoza Line, starting with Simple Creature and its average of $1,182 in three theaters. It was playing on VOD, which is the only valid excuse for earning less than $2,000 on the theater average chart. Joy of Learning and I Dream in Another Language were both playing in one theater earning $1,149 and $810.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Women’s Balcony reached $1 million just before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • The Little Hours also got to $1 million before the weekend. It has a small shot at $2 million.
  • The Big Sick earned $25 million before the weekend and hit $30 million during the weekend. It is now the biggest limited release hit of the year, overtaking Gifted. By the end of the upcoming weekend, it will be a top 40 hit for 2017.
