Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Shazam! Fury of the Gods retains its opening count of 4,071 cinemas, once again making it the widest release. The film earned a disappointing $30.11 million in its opening weekend and currently sits with a six-day total of $35.6 million from North American showings. Internationally it earned similar numbers with weekend figures of $34.6 million. Despite its designation as widest release, Fury of the Gods will take a back seat at the box office this week as the latest installment of the John Wick franchise is expected to easily dominate.

Making its theatrical launch in 3,855 locations, John Wick: Chapter 4 brings back Keanu Reeves as the titular character as he must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe in order to obtain his freedom. Its predecessor, John Wick: Chapter 3—Parabellum took in a solid $56.82 million from 3,850 cinemas back in May of 2019 and went on to complete its run with $171 million in domestic earnings. So far the franchise has garnered a worldwide take of over $574 million from its first three films. The latest feature is once again directed by Chad Stahelski and contains a star-studded ensemble cast to accompany Reeves.

Worthy of mention is the release of The Lost King this week, which will make its debut in 753 locations.

Scream VI takes a drop this week, but is still widely available in 3,355 movie houses, while Adam Driver’s 65, loses 619 locations this week for a total of 2,786 theaters. Creed III is still widely available for big screen viewing, playing in 3,207 venues this week.

Arriving in limited release this week is the Mexican comedy, ¡Que viva México!. Debuting in 90 venues, the film is a political satire directed by Luis Estrada which follows a middle-class family man who reluctantly gets back in touch with the family he abandoned in search of a possible inheritance after his grandfather’s death. Playing in one location each this week are a couple of French films in The Five Devils and The Worst Ones.

Looking ahead to next week we see the arrival of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. The fantasy-action film based on the popular role-playing game is projected to debut in about 3,600 locations according to Paramount. Also set to open wide in an estimated 800 cinemas next week is the drama A Thousand and One.
