Our DVD and Blu-ray sales estimates are based on weekly retail surveys, which we use to build a weekly market share estimate for each title we are tracking. The market share is converted into a weekly sales estimate based on industry reports on the overall size of the market, including reports published in Media Play News.

For example, if our weekly retail survey estimates that a particular title sold 1% of all units that week, and the industry reports sales of 1,500,000 units in total, we will estimate 15,000 units were sold of that title. The consumer spending estimate is based on the average sales price for the title in the retailers we survey.

We refine our estimates from week to week as more data becomes available. In particular, we adjust weekly sales figures for the quarter once the total market estimates are published by the Digital Entertainment Group. Figures will therefore fluctuate each week, and totals for individual titles can go up or down as we update our estimates.

Because sales figures are estimated based on sampling, they will be more accurate for higher-selling titles.

The movie opened in 4,025 locations and bumps up to a solid 4,343 cinemas starting Friday. The adventure film starring Chris Pratt as the beloved Italian plumber-turned-hero nabbed an impressive $31.7 million on its opening day in North America, while taking in $34.7 million overseas. March 23rd, 2023

Shazam! Fury of the Gods

Shazam! Fury of the Gods retains its opening count of 4,071 cinemas, once again making it the widest release. The film earned a disappointing $30.11 million in its opening weekend and currently sits with a six-day total of $35.6 million from North American showings. Internationally it earned similar numbers with weekend figures of $34.6 million. Despite its designation as widest release, Fury of the Gods will take a back seat at the box office this week as the latest installment of the John Wick franchise is expected to easily dominate. Weekend projections: Scream VI debuts with franchise-best $44.5 million

March 12th, 2023

Scream VI

Scream VI has lost a little momentum through the weekend but will still post the best opening for Scream franchise, topping the $34.7 million earned by Scream 3 on its opening weekend back in 2000. Its $44.5 million is also well ahead of the $30 million earned by last year’s Scream. More...

Weekend predictions: Scream could make second $50-million start in two weeks

March 10th, 2023

Scream VI

Scream VI is looking like a surefire winner at the box office this weekend after growing buzz over the past few weeks and strong reviews (for a horror film) built up to $5.7 million in previews on Thursday, considerably more than the $3.5 million earned by Scream (V) last year. Its predecessor earned $30 million on opening weekend, and $50 million looks within reach for Scream VI this weekend. More...

Theater counts: Creed III fends off a trio of new wide releases to stay on top

March 9th, 2023

Creed III

Boxing drama Creed III opened last weekend and delivered a knockout at the box office, scoring an impressive $58.37 million, not only making it the franchise’s top opening weekend, but the top opening weekend in history for a sports-themed movie, narrowly topping 2010’s The Karate Kid. Despite having its hands full with three new wide releases making their theatrical debuts, the film keeps its opening theater count of 4,007 cinemas heading into its second week, once again making it the widest release of the week. Theater counts: Creed III punches its way into 4,007 theaters

March 2nd, 2023

Creed III

The third installment of the Creed franchise, and ninth overall film in the Rocky film series, Creed III enters the fray this week as the widest release, and the only film showing in over 4,000 locations. 4,007 of them, to be precise. The sports drama, starring Michael B. Jordan as Adonis Creed, is also Jordan’s directorial debut. The opening count is a Rocky franchise record.

Also opening in wide release is the action-comedy Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre. Starting out in 2,168 locations, the movie features an all-star ensemble cast including Jason Statham, Hugh Grant, Aubrey Plaza, Cary Elwes, Josh Hartnett and Bugzy Malone. Directed by Guy Ritchie, the movie follows super spy Orson Fortune (played by Statham) and his team of top operatives as they recruit Hollywood’s biggest movie star to help them on an undercover mission to stop a billionaire arms broker (played by Grant) from selling a deadly new weapons technology that threatens to disrupt the world order. January 20th, 2022

Spider-Man: No Way Home

After topping Spider-Man: No Way Home at the weekend box office, Scream has spent the week trading spots with the webbed superhero, with one outperforming the other one day, only to fall into second place the next. Spider-Man enters its sixth week by showing in 3,705 theaters while Scream gains two locations, bringing this week’s count to 3,666 in its sophomore run. Both films will most likely once again spar to see who takes the top prize at the box office, although two new wide releases will be trying to offer some competition. More...

Theater counts: Scream and Belle debut but Spider-Man retains its grip

January 13th, 2022

Spider-Man: No Way Home

After an 11-year hiatus, Ghostface is back, terrifying the townspeople of Woodsboro. The first film in the Scream franchise not to be directed by Wes Craven, Scream (colloquially known as Scream 5) is helmed by the directing duo of Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, both of whom previously directed 2014’s Devil’s Due, and 2019’s Ready or Not. Through its first four films, between 1996 and 2011, the franchise has earned just over $600 million worldwide. The latest installment, which had a $24-million production budget, brings back franchise veterans Courteney Cox, David Arquette and Neve Campbell along with a cast of new faces. Scream will open in 3,664 theaters. Also opening in wide release this week is the Japanese animated science fantasy film Belle. The film, which was the third-highest-grossing Japanese film of 2021, is set to arrive in an estimated 1,300 locations. More...

Theater counts: The 355 not enough to unseat Spider-Man

January 6th, 2022

Spider-Man: No Way Home

Last week was all about Spider-Man: No Way Home as we experienced a week where no new wide releases opened. While this week won’t be a drastic change in that regard, we do see one film open wide with the release of the all-female espionage thriller, The 355. The film follows a globe-trotting quartet of women, each with a particular set of unique skills, who must forge a tenuous loyalty that could protect the world—or get them killed. The 355 opens in 3,145 theaters. More...
