Theater counts: The Eras Tour holds off Five Nights at Freddy’s to remain widest release

October 26, 2023

TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR

Despite dropping 82 locations this week, TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR will remain the widest release for the third consecutive week, still available in a 3,773 theaters, outpacing a bevy of newcomers, including the supernatural horror, Five Nights at Freddy’s as it makes its way into theaters. The concert film will likely fall into second place at the box office, but there are still plenty of opportunities to see the mega event on the big screen.

Based on the video game franchise of the same name, Five Nights at Freddy’s follows a troubled security guard as he begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through as he must fight off four animatronic mascots who will kill anyone there after midnight. Directed by Emma Tammi, the movie stars Josh Hutcherson, and is set to launch in 3,675 locations.

Also opening in wide release this week is the latest from Angel Studios with the documentary, After Death. Starting out in 2,605 cinemas, the faith-based film explores the afterlife based on real near-death experiences, conveyed by scientists, authors, and survivors. The movie’s opening count places it in the top 10 widest releases for a documentary.

The other movies debuting in wide release this week are the action comedy, Freelance, starring John Cena, and Alison Brie, and the Spanish computer-animated film, Inspector Sun. Our review of booked theaters suggests that the latter will play in fewer than 500 theaters, but we will update those counts when they become available.

Rounding out the top five this week is last week’s newcomer Killers of the Flower Moon, adding four locations for a total of 3,632 this week. The Martin Scorsese-directed feature accumulated $23.25 million in its opening weekend and currently holds a six-day total of $30.16 million. Owning the fourth place position this week is another Paramount Pictures release, PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie, showing in 2,746 cinemas. Lastly, The Exorcist: Believer, takes the fifth place spot, still widely available in 2,717 movie venues.

Looking ahead to next week we see the wide expansion of the biopic Priscilla (after opening in two locations this week). The drama showcases the life and relationship with the biggest rock star in the world, through the eyes of Priscilla Presley. Also opening wide next week is The Marsh King’s Daughter, a psychological survival-thriller starring Daisy Ridley. Lastly, the romantic comedy What Happens Later, starring David Duchovny and Meg Ryan becomes available nationwide.
