Theater Counts: Summer Hits Get New Lease of Life

August 24, 2017

With not much by way of new releases this weekend, the studios are taking their chance to grab back some screens for their Summer hits. Wonder Woman, for example, has the rare distinction of being the movie with the biggest increase in theaters in its 13th weekend in release. Baby Driver also gets kicked back into wide release in its 10th weekend. This movement tells you pretty much all you need to know about the new wide releases. More...

The Hitman’s Bodyguard

Summer continues to wind down this weekend with The Hitman’s Bodyguard the widest new release, in 3,377 theaters. That’s comfortably the widest opening ever for the studio, ahead of the first film in the franchise’s 3,427 theater start in 2014. Coincidentally, AMC sold its 50% stake in Open Road to Tang Media earlier this week. Its new owner will presumably be pleased with the success in getting the film into theaters, although it isn’t generally expected to top the chart. More...

August 3, 2017

The Dark Tower

After a long gestation, The Dark Tower makes it into theaters this weekend in a solid 3,451 movie houses. While that’s a lot less than such luminaries as The Emoji Movie, it’s not bad for a live action film (by comparison, Dunkirk opened in 3,720 theaters a few weeks ago). Also out wide this weekend: Detroit plays in 3,007 theaters for Annapurna Pictures, and Kidnap debuts in 2,378 venues for Aviron Pictures, with both distributors making their first forays into nationwide rollouts.
