DVD Sales: Gone Walks All Over Competition

February 2, 2015

Gone Girl led the new releases on the DVD sales chart with sales of 460,000 units / $6.97 million during its opening week of release. This is a good start for the film and probably enough to get to 1 million units before it is done. Eventually. Second place went to another new release, A Walk Among the Tombstones, with 166,000 units / $3.10 million. Left Behind fell to third place with 74,000 units / $861,000 over the week for totals of 275,000 units / $2.91 million after two weeks of release. This isn't bad, when you compare it to its box office numbers. The Equalizer slipped a spot to fourth with 70,000 units / $1.40 million for the week and 866,000 units / $15.73 million after three weeks of release. It will get to 1 million units, but it will fall out of the top five before then. Guardians of the Galaxy remained in fifth place with 54,000 units / $804,000 over the week for totals of 2.44 million / $35.61 million after six weeks of release. This is an excellent run and it is doing even better on Blu-ray.

Scorpion King 4: Quest for Power opened in eighth place with 44,000 units / $814,000 for the week. This is good for a direct-to-DVD release. Boardwalk Empire: The Complete Fifth Season opened in 15th place with 24,000 units / $853,000 for the week.
