Weekend Estimates: Think Like a Man Rolls to Weekend Win

June 22nd, 2014

Mid-Summer weekend will produce a near tie at the box office, according to estimates released on Sunday, with Sony in first and second place. Think Like a Man Too will come out top with about $30 million, according to the studio—basically in line with the $33 million earned by the first film in the franchise. That portends a total that will fall short of the $91.5 million earned by the previous outing domestically, and with limited international appeal, this installment will be solidly, but not spectacularly profitable. Enough for a third film? Probably.

In second place will be Sony’s other comedy sequel, 22 Jump Street, which will fall a respectable 49% in its second weekend to $29 million. How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be down by the same proportion at $25.3 million—a little more disappointing for a family-skewing film, and a blow for Fox, which must have been hoping for the film to be well past the $100 million mark by now (it currently stands at $95 million).

Jersey Boys, the weekend’s other new wide release, will be 4th with about $13.5 million. That’s basically a par score for a Clint Eastwood-directed film, although it’s a long time since one of his films came out in the Summer season, rather than aiming for Oscars in the mid to late Fall. Long term prospects for the film don’t look good, although the older-skewing audience might help give it longer legs in theaters.

In limited release, Venus in Fur is the only film, other than Think Like a Man Too, reporting so far, to average over $10,000 in each theater. It is projected to earn $26,200 in two theaters.
