International Box Office: Jurassic Park Roars in China

Jurassic Park earned first place in China with $32.08 on 3,000 screens, but that was for the full week. Over the weekend, the film's international weekend haul was $28.9 million on 3,373 screens in 11 markets for a total of $43.37 million during its 3-D re-release. Even with the tiny studio share in China, it makes sense to release films like this in 3-D there, because they didn't get a chance to see it in theaters the first time around.
Elysium slipped to second place with $20.65 million on 4,983 screens in 47 markets for a still early total of $71.36 million. The film opened in first place in the U.K. with $3.35 million on 710 screens over the weekend for a total of $4.87 million. Its best holdover came from France where it slipped to second place with $2.56 million on 468 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $7.97 million.
Monsters University earned third place with $19.6 million in 54 markets for a total of $424.8 million internationally and $686.6 million worldwide. The film earned second place in China with $12.99 million for the week. Meanwhile it placed first in Italy with $3.08 million on 712 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.45 million.
Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters landed in fourth place with $18.9 million on 7,595 screens in 44 markets for a total of $62.9 million. It opened in second place in Russia with $5.07 million on 1920 screens, which is good in comparison to its opening here. On the other hand, it will need to at least double its current international box office if it wants to break even any time soon.
The flip-side of that equation is The Conjuring, which earned a profit on its domestic numbers alone. Its international numbers haven't been bad either. This weekend it added $17.7 million in 37 markets for a total of $88.4 million. That's an excellent running tally for a film that cost just $20 million to make. It had the biggest opening ever for a horror film in Mexico with $4.32 million on 1,680 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.71 million. It had to settle for third place in Italy with $1.37 million on 334 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $1.91 million. It was weaker in France playing fourth with $2.48 million on 241 screens, but even then it had the best per screen average in the top ten there, likely the best in the market.
Now You See Me earned $14.2 million on 3,200 screens in 79 markets for totals of $176.8 million internationally and $293.2 million worldwide. The film had a surprisingly strong start in South Korea with $5.88 million on 691 screens over the weekenf for a total opening of $6.80 million.
The Smurfs 2 landed in seventh place with $13.14 million on 7,173 screens in 66 markets for totals of $174.12 million internationally and $236.71 million worldwide. It should get to $250 million worldwide, but while that will be enough to save face, it likely won't be enough to justify The Smurfs 3.
Despicable Me 2 became the first Universal film to reach the $800 million mark since Jurassic Park. It pulled in $10.9 million on 4,469 screens in 50 markets for totals of $445.13 million internationally and $805.83 million worldwide.
We're the Millers slipped to ninth place with $8.5 million on 2,095 screens in 19 markets for an early international total of $23.1 million. The film debuted in second place in the U.K. with $2.35 million on 422 screens. Meanwhile, it held on well in Australia, down less than 30% to $1.51 million on 342 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $4.58 million.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones debuted in tenth place with $7.75 million in 12 markets. Its best market was Brazil, where it earned third place with $1.19 million on 447 screens over the weekend. Its biggest market was the U.K., but it only managed fourth place with $1.78 million on 419 screens. It also placed fourth in Australia with $1.44 million on 230 screens.
