The new releases for July 28th were led by Home, which dominated the combined DVD and Blu-ray chart for August 2nd. The film sold 1.18 million units and generated $22.60 million in revenue. That was enough to put it in 16th place on the yearly chart after just one week of release. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 42%, which is good for a kids movie.

The Longest Ride was pushed into second place with 94,000 units / $1.51 million for the week for totals of 876,000 units / $14.78 million after three weeks of release. Justice League: Gods and Monsters opened in third place with 90,000 units / $1.39 million. Its opening week Blu-ray share was 63%, which is great compared to the format as a whole, but these releases from D.C. Comics have a history of selling really well on Blu-ray. Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 fell to fourth place with 69,000 units / $1.27 million for the week giving it totals of 529,000 units / $9.74 million after a month of release. Descendants opened in fifth place with 68,000 units / $1.02 million. It wasn't released on Blu-ray, so all of its sales came from DVD. Additionally, it had a shortened week, because it came out on a Friday, not a Tuesday.

The only other new release to chart was The Water Diviner, which earned seventh place with 46,000 units / $687,000. Its opening week Blu-ray share was low at 21%, but dramas rarely do well on Blu-ray.

Total Blu-ray sales exploded when compared to last week, rising 55% in terms of units and 96% in terms of revenue. Compared to last year, on the other hand, there were 0.2% fewer units sold and the revenue is 15% lower. DVD sales grew less compared to last week and fell more compared to last year, which helped the overall Blu-ray share grow to 36% compared to 26% last week and 33% last year.

The overall DVD market was essentially flat when compared to last week, at least in terms of units, with just a 0.2% decline. On the other hand, revenue went up 23%. Compared to last year, were there 14% lower in terms of units and 19% lower in terms of revenue.

Next week's new releases will be led by Insurgent. It will be interesting to see if it can match Divergent, which was released this week last year. Given its reviews, I'm betting it doesn't. Divergent led the way on DVD and Blu-ray, but its totals were not as good as Home's sales this week, so it is very likely we will see declines both week-over-week and year-over-year.
