Friday Estimates: Krampus is in a Festive Mood

December 5, 2015

Krampus

2015 has had some record highs, but plenty of record lows as well. The weekend after Thanksgiving is historically one of the low points of the year. However, this year it is doing rather well thanks to a surprisingly fast start by Krampus. Don't get me wrong. This isn’t going to be a monster hit, and probably not even a midlevel one. However, it earned $6.01 million on Friday, which is enough for first place and excellent for this time of year. With a start like this and overall positive reviews, it might top $15 million during its opening weekend, which is more that it is estimated to have cost.

On the other hand, Krampus won’t be in first place for long, as The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 will outpace it over the full weekend. Mockingjay, Part 2 is the only film with a shot at $20 million over the weekend after pulling in $5.62 million on Friday. It likely won’t get to $20 million, but it should be close with $19 million.

The Good Dinosaur and Creed are both on pace for $15 million over the weekend, more or less. This is a sharper drop-off than expected for Dinosaur, which earned just $3.41 million on Friday. Its legs are similar to those of Penguins of Madagascar and not your typical Pixar release. It will need help internationally and / or on the home market to break even. Creed managed third place on Friday with $4.61 million, but its more mature target demographic means it won’t climb as much on Saturday as Dinosaur. It might bounce back enough to take third place from Krampus, but probably not.

There are a couple of other films of note to talk about, including The Letters, which bombed. It only managed $245,000 in nearly 900 theaters opening day and will finish well below $1 million over the weekend. On the other hand Chi-raq will earn more than $1 million, perhaps close to $1.5 million, while playing in just over 300 theaters.
