February 4, 2016

Kung Fu Panda 3

Kung Fu Panda 3 opened in first place on the international chart with $75.7 million in six markets over the weekend. This includes a first place, $50.77 million over the weekend in China for a total opening of $57.47 million. The film also earned first place in South Korea with $9.14 million on 1,364 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $10.54 million. Its other major market opening was in Russia, where it topped the chart with $4.71 million on 1,190 screens. The film will clearly do better internationally than it will domestically. It is too soon to tell how well it will do worldwide when compared to the other films in the franchise.

The Revenant was pushed into second place with $24.3 million in 61 markets for totals of $136.6 million internationally and $275.2 million worldwide. This is twice what it cost to make, which means it likely has covered its entire production budget, so it only needs to cover its advertising budget from now on.

The Fifth Wave remained in third place with $13.0 million in 66 markets for totals of $45.1 million internationally and $65.4 million worldwide. It is on pace for $100 million worldwide, which is an okay run for a film that cost $38 million to make. It opened in first place in France with $2.69 million on 409 screens. It also broke records for a Young Adult Book Adaptation in both Columbia ($527,000 on 185 screens) and in Chile ($432,000 on 54). YA Adaptations tend to perform poorly internationally when compared to their runs domestically, so this is a strange twist.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip returned to the international chart in fourth place with $12.8 million in 48 markets over the weekend for totals of $69.5 million internationally and $152.8 million worldwide. The film opened in China, but only managed third place with $2.21 million over the weekend for a six-day opening of $5.56 million. It also opened in sixth place in Germany with $1.68 million on 600 screens.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens fell to fifth place with $12.6 million over the weekend for totals of $1.087 billion internationally and $1.984 billion worldwide. By this time next week, the film will be above $2 billion worldwide.
