International Box Office: Force Awakens Drops Out of Top Five, but Cracks $2 Billion Worldwide

The Revenant returned to first place with $24.0 million in 67 markets over the weekend for totals of $176.4 million internationally and $325.9 million worldwide. By this time next week, the film will very likely be above $200 million internationally, while $400 million worldwide is within reach.
Kung Fu Panda 3 was very close behind with $23.0 million in just seven markets for an international total of $129.0 million and a worldwide total of $198.3 million. Its biggest market was China, where it fell 70% to $15.39 million over the weekend for a total of $103.34 million after 16 days of release. It became the first animated film to cross $100 million in China. It is still way too early to tell where it will finish worldwide, but I can't image it won't earn a healthy profit after this start.
A Violent Prosecutor opened in first place in South Korea and third place internationally with $15.73 million on 1,701 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $22.03 million.
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip remained in fourth place with $12.8 million in 55 markets over the weekend for totals of $87.7 million internationally and $171.4 million worldwide. In France the film opened in third place with $2.66 million on 582 screens.
The Hateful Eight returned to the top five for the first time in nearly a month with $8.5 million in 33 markets for totals of $63.0 million internationally and $116.0 million worldwide. The film did very well in Italy earning first place with $3.84 million on 643 screens.
Normally we end at the top five, but the biggest story of the weekend is lower down the list.
Les Tuches 2 debuted in sixth place with $8.96 million on 636 screens. This includes a first place, $8.38 million opening on 603 screens in France and a second place, $582,000 opening on 33 screens in Belgium.
The Fifth Wave slipped to seventh place with $7.7 million in 69 markets for totals of $58.5 million internationally and $84.2 million worldwide. The film has very likely covered its entire production budget, so it only needs to cover its advertising budget the rest of the way. Granted, it has very few markets left to open in, but it should break even on the home market, eventually.
We finally get to the biggest news of the week, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film broke the $2 billion mark worldwide, becoming the first film not directed by a Canadian to reach that milestone. It earned $7.0 million in 41 markets for totals of $1.102 billion internationally and $2.008 billion worldwide.
