Game of Thrones: Season Five

There are several top-notch releases coming out this week, including a trio of Awards Season contenders: The Big Short, Brooklyn, and Carol. All three are Pick of the Week contenders. However, the winner of that title is Game of Thrones: Season Five on Blu-ray.

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Why do they keep making these movies? This one was terrible and will need help on the home market to break even. If you have kids that love these movies and watch them over and over again, then perhaps it is worth picking up.

The Big Short - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I am really looking forward to seeing this movie and I was hoping to review it. However, the screener is late. Given its reviews, it would be a Pick of the Week contender, even if there were no extras. Unfortunately, the DVD does have no extras. The Blu-ray has more than an hour of featurettes on various subjects, including the cast, making of the film, the real-life events, etc. It is absolutely worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

Brooklyn - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This was one of the most nominated films of this past Awards Season, but despite earning 97% positive reviews, it struggled to turn nominations into awards. Extras include an audio commentary track, deleted / extended scenes, and "promotional featurettes". "Promotional featurettes" usually means short fluff pieces, but hopefully that's not the case here, as the movie deserves more. Even if it is the case, the movie is still a contender for Pick of the Week.

Carol - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This film also earned stunning reviews and picked up a ton of Awards Season nominations, but almost no wins. Extras include a series of behind-the-scene featurettes and a 30-minute Q&A session. This is definitely worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

CHiPs: The Complete Forth Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This TV on DVD release is selling very well compared to most other new releases this week. I'm not sure why.

Debbie Macomber's Cedar Cove: The Final Season - Buy from Amazon: DVD
I have never seen this show, so I can't comment on the quality. That said, it was part of our most recent contest and we will be announcing the winner shortly.

Game of Thrones: Season Five - Buy from Amazon:
DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
One of the biggest hit TV shows currently on air, but there were some controversies that happened last season. Is it still a worthy show? Or has the quality peaked? Check out our review to find out.

Jean-Claude Van Damme - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
I might actually want to buy this. Jean-Claude Van Damme isn't know for quality work, but I'm a fan from the 1980s, so I might have to buy this Blu-ray.

The Manchurian Candidate: Criterion Collection - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
One of the best political thrillers of all time is getting the Criterion Collection touch this week. Extras include both new and archival interviews, plus an audio commentary track from 1998. Definitely worth picking up and in a less crowded week, a contender for Pick of the Week.

The Muppet Show - Buy from Amazon: Season Two and Season Three
They released the first three seasons back in 2005 through 2008. Since then, nothing. I really want the final two seasons of this show on DVD.

New Tricks, Season 12 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
None of the original cast are still on this show and as the cast changed, the ratings fell. This is why this will be the last season.

Sisters - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star as sisters who decide to throw one last party when their parents decide to sell their childhood home. The reviews for the film were just below the overall positive level, but it was a box office hit and may have already broken even. There are lots of extras on the DVD and plenty of exclusives on the Blu-ray. If it were a slow week at the top, then it could have been a Pick of the Week contender. It is not a slow week at the top. It is still worth picking up.

Steve Jobs: The Man in the Machine - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
While a lot of people love Apple products, no theatrical release about Steve Jobs, documentary or otherwise, has found an audience.

Video on Demand - Buy from Amazon: Anomalisa, And Then There Were None: Season 1, Bedtime Bonzo, Eyewitness, Concussion, Craig Ferguson: Just Being Honest, Happily Ever After, The Hateful Eight, Point Break, and Waffle Street
It is a great week for VOD with a number of major releases. Anomalisa is the best and it even earned an Oscars Nomination. The Hateful Eight is the biggest release and is also great.

When They Cry: Season 1 - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
This Anime title is in the top ten best-selling new releases for the week, at least according to Amazon.com. People who shop at Amazon.com tend to disproportionately buy Anime, so it is not likely it will actually chart, but it is worth noting.
