Friday Estimates: Curse of Great Expectations Strikes Civil War

Friday’s estimates are in and Captain America: Civil War did amazing business during its opening day. According to Disney, it earned the 8th-biggest single day of all time with $75.25 million. However, to paraphrase Uncle Ben, with great powers comes great expectations and there are some who consider this a disappointment, because the film isn’t living up to the hype. There is some very good news going forward.
The film’s critical reception is shared by the average moviegoer and its CinemaScore was a very solid A. That said, it won’t match our prediction, but a $170 million to $180 million opening weekend is still something to celebrate. It has been estimated that the film will need to make over $600 million worldwide to break even and it is on pace to crack that internationally, so its domestic numbers are pure gravy. Even so, there are some who are going to claim that failing to match predictions means this is the beginning of the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but you should ignore these people. They likely wrote similar stories before, hoping Ant-Man or Guardians of the Galaxy would bomb.
