Theater Averages: Operation Excellence

August 9, 2016

Operation Chromite

Operation Chromite, the South Korean war movie, opened on first place on the theater average chart with $31,662. This put it just ahead of the overall box office champion, Suicide Squad, which earned an average of $31,418. Little Men was next with an average of $15,184 in two theaters. The re-release of Elevator to the Gallows was close behind with $14,334 in its lone theater. The final film in the $10,000 club was Equity, with an average of $13,629 in four theaters during its second weekend of release.

The best of the rest of the new limited releases wasn’t actually a new release. It was the re-release of Multiple Maniacs, as the film earned $9,814 in its one theater. Neither Heaven nor Earth was well back with $2,836, also in one theater. Finally we have Five Nights in Maine. The film missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $906 in ten theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Train to Busan, the South Korean zombie flick, reached $1 million over the weekend. It has a reasonable shot at $2 million.
  • Hunt for the Wilderpeople topped $3 million before the weekend and it should have no trouble getting to $4 million before too long.
  • Captain Fantastic hit $3 million very early in the weekend and it is already more than halfway to $4 million.
  • Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie made it to $4 million during the weekend, but it is losing theaters rapidly, so it likely won’t get to $5 million.
  • Café Society surpassed $5 million just before the weekend. It will likely start losing theaters soon, but even so, $10 million seems safe.
  • As expected, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party made it all the way to $10 million before the weekend. However, that’s as far as it will go. It lost a significant number of theaters over the weekend and will likely lose many more this coming weekend.
