Home Market Releases for November 15th, 2016

Game of Thrones: Season Six

There are several prime releases on this week’s Home Market report. This includes the biggest film of the week, Finding Dory, which was previously named Pick of the Week. I suspect a lot of people reading this have pre-ordered the Blu-ray already. Other contenders for Pick of the Week include Game of Thrones: Season Six and Rush: Time Stands Still on Blu-ray. I’m awarding Pick of the Week to Game of Thrones, while Rush gets Puck of the Week, for best Canadian release.

The Beatles: Eight Days a Week - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A documentary about The Beatles directed by Ron Howard. The reviews are over 90% positive and the two-disc Blu-ray has nearly two hours of extras. These extras include rare performances, which is probably the biggest selling point

Better Call Saul: Season Two - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
One of the best-reviewed shows on TV at the moment. There are tons of extras, including plenty of Blu-ray exclusive extras. Most normal weeks, it would likely be the Pick of the Week. However, there’s a lot of great competition this week. It is still a contender, on the other hand.

Citizen Kane: 75th Anniversary Eddtion - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Arguably the greatest movie ever made. However, the 75th anniversary edition isn’t a big enough leap from the 70th anniversary edition to be worth the double-dip.

Code: Debugging the Gender Gap - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
I read an interview with a woman who started in industry back when working with computers was considered secretarial work and it was dominated by women. She started before computer science was something you can study and to get a job, you had to be tested to see if you could handle it. She left the industry to raise her kids and when she came back, the industry was dominated by men. It had changed from secretarial work to work that demanded logic and reason. However, the test she was given this time around tested the exact same traits as before. This pops into my mind whenever I hear someone say there are so few women in computer science because they don’t want to or men are just naturally better at it. Women didn’t change overnight, but the perception of the jobs did.

Depeche Mode: Video Singles Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The first of two music releases on this week's list, three if you include Yessongs in the secondary Blu-ray list below. I never got into Depeche Mode, but I’ve heard a few songs of theirs that I like. If I had to pick up just one of the music releases, it would obviously be Rush.

Finding Dory - Buy from Amazon: DVD, Blu-ray Combo Pack, or 3D Combo Pack
Video on Demand
I was able to review this Blu-ray a week early and you can read that review here. The film was already named Pick of the Week and it earned it.

Game of Thrones: Season Six - Buy from Amazon: DVD and Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This show broke records for HBO this season, becoming their most watched show of all time. It also broke records for most overall Emmy wins for a drama and tied its own record for most wins in a single season. However, last season there were issues that could be omens for a substantial decline in quality. Did that happen? Or was the show able to make improvements? Read our review for my opinion.

Also coming out this week is a Game of Thrones Megaset on DVD or Blu-ray. I would wait for the show to end before grabbing a Megaset. I am a little worried Megasets will be an annual tradition from now on.

Mia madre - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film appeared on our Limited and VOD Release report three times, because it kept switching release dates. The reviews are excellent and it deserves to be seen by more people.

The Middle: Season Seven - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
This show has earned really good reviews throughout its seven-year run so far, but I think it is just too Sitcomy for my tastes.

The Mindy Project: Season Four - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
It is rare for a show to be canceled after three seasons, because if a show lasts four seasons, it will have enough episodes for syndication and syndication is so lucrative that even low ratings would be worth it. However, The Mindy Project was canceled by Fox after three years. Fortunately for fans and critics, Hulu picked it up and have even renewed it for a fifth season. Extras include deleted scenes and outtakes, which is on par with most TV on DVD releases these days.

Peanuts Holiday Anniversary Collection - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Three of the most well-known and most beloved shows. If you don’t have these on Blu-ray yet, then spending $20 for the set makes complete sense.

Rush: Time Stands Still - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Do you know how to tell when you are getting old? When one of your favorite bands from your childhood decides to retire. Not break up because they hate each other, but retire because they know they are getting too old for major tours.

Sailor Moon S: Season Three, Part 1 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack or Limited Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack
The revival of this show, Sailor Moon Crystal, has been very popular, so I’m not surprised the older sets are being released and are selling so well. The price could scare away some people; just over $50 for a split-season seems like a lot. However, this isn’t that high compared to other Anime import titles.

Star Trek: The Animated Series - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
I’m really hoping to get a screener for this release, as I love all things Star Trek. The Animated Series is the least known of the shows, but there are some advantages to making a Star Trek show as a cartoon. I’m not sure if the Blu-ray is worth the price, on the other hand, so I have to wait for the screener to come up with a solid recommendation.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 3D Combo Pack
I put in a request to review this movie, but 3D screeners tend to be very limited. That said, you can read my previous review here. Also coming out this week is The Jungle Book in 3-D, which I reviewed here.

Time After Time - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
In this movie, H.G. Wells creates a time machine, but Jack the Ripper uses it to travel to modern day and H.G. Wells travels after him to prevent him from continuing his murder spree. The reviews are really good and it is arguably one of the better movies to deal with Jack the Ripper. It’s not a Pick of the Week contender, but it is worth picking up.

The Take - Reviews - Video on Demand
The idiot friend who made me watch Batman v Superman is threatening to make we watch Suicide Squad as well. They claim it is better, so I choose to remain cautiously optimistic.
