International Box Office: Journey Begins with One Step... and $86 million

Journey to the West 2

International movies dominated the international top five with international films earning the top three spots. This includes Journey to the West 2, which earned first place with $86 million in seven markets. It dominated China with $84.09 million during its opening weekend, including a record opening day for a Chinese film, $52.3 million. The original film made just over $200 million worldwide, so this is a great start, but its mixed reviews are miles behind the original’s reviews, so that will likely hurt its legs.

Buddies in India opened in second place with $44.61 million in its native China.

Meanwhile, the third film on this week’s list was Kung Fu Yoga, which earned $38.85 million in China. Three Chinese films on top of the chart would normally be stunning, but it was Chinese New Year this past weekend, so that explains a lot.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was next with $25.29 million on 7,492 screens in 56 markets for totals of $63.11 million internationally and $76.71 million worldwide. The film’s biggest market was Mexico, where it earned first place with $3.20 million on 1,621 screens. Meanwhile, it managed fourth place in South Korea with $2.08 million on 599 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $3.00 million. The film needs to make at least $100 million internationally to have a chance of breaking even any time soon and this result gives it an excellent chance of getting there.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage rounded out the top five with $24 million in 62 markets over the weekend for totals of $89 million internationally and $122.84 million worldwide. The film has been doing well in a number of Asian markets. For example, it earned first place in Malaysia with $2.2 million. On the other hand, the film fell 67% in Russia to $1.77 million on 1,369 screens over the weekend for a two-week total of $8.51 million.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story almost fell out of the top 20 with $3.8 million in 32 markets for totals of $510.0 million internationally and $1.030 billion worldwide. It is now in second place on the 2016 worldwide chart. It won’t climb any further.
