International Box Office: Guardians Have a Nearly Galaxy-Wide Opening with $101.2 million

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 started its international run in first place with $101.2 million in 37 markets. The film’s biggest single market was the U.K., where it dominated the market with a 67% market share and $16.94 million in 632 theaters. This is 86% above the opening the original opened with in that market and the second best opening in that market this year. It also cracked $10 million in Australia earning $6.44 million on 705 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $11.72 million. This is more than half of the total weekend box office and an improvement of 27% from the original film; however, the Wednesday opening reduced its weekend haul. Other major markets include Germany ($8.3 million); Mexico ($8.13 million); France ($7.9 million); and Brazil ($6.9 million). Given this start, the film should be able to reach $500 million internationally, maybe even $600 million, depending on its legs. That would give it a realistic shot at $1 billion worldwide.
The Fate of the Furious was pushed into second place with $73.9 million on 19,210 screens in 69 markets for totals of $873.51 million internationally and $1.067 billion worldwide. It is the 29th film to reach $1 billion worldwide and by the end of the weekend, it was in the top 20 on the All-Time Worldwide chart. On the downside, it only managed second place during its opening in Japan with $7.8 million. (Beauty and the Beast remained in first place, but more on that down below.) The film’s biggest market of the weekend was China with $22.46 million over the weekend for a three-week total of $363.39 million. It has become the biggest Hollywood film in terms of local currency overtaking Furious 7 2.43 Billion RMB to 2.42 Billion RMB; however, it will take a bit to top the $390.87 million Furious 7 earned there.
Shock Wave opened in first place in China and third place internationally with $24.45 million over the weekend for a total of $24.62 million, including previews.
Battle Of Memories earned third place in China and fourth place internationally with $21.80 million over the weekend for a total opening of $21.97 million.
Beauty and the Beast grabbed the final spot in the top five with $17.2 million in 46 markets for totals of $662.4 million internationally and $1.143 billion worldwide. By the end of the weekend, it was the 13th biggest hit all-time. The film’s biggest market of the weekend was Japan, where it earned 9% more than it did during its opening weekend, sort of. It’s complicated. The film earned $14.71 million according to revised numbers, but that was for the film’s three-day weekend. Japan has two-day weekends. So this time around, the film earned 9% more over two days than it earned during the two-day weekend last week. This weekend it earned $9.94 million for a two-week total of $32.40 million. Because films in Japan have such long legs, it has a chance of becoming the film’s biggest market overall, topping the U.K., which has $90.27 million so far.
