Theater Averages: Spider-Man has Storybook $26,915 Opening

July 11, 2017

Spider-Man: Homecoming

There was a really close race on the theater chart this week with Spider-Man: Homecoming topping A Ghost Story $26,915 to $26,008. The only other film to top $10,000 was The Big Sick, which earned an average of $10,971 in 326 theaters.

There were only a few other new limited releases that we have numbers for. City of Ghosts was the best of the rest with an average of $6,801 in two theaters. Swim Team opened with $4,024 in its lone theater. This isn’t bad, for a documentary. Our Time Will Come struggled with an average of $2,812 in 18 theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Hero got to $2 million before the weekend and will get to $3 million before the upcoming weekend.
  • Maudie hit $3 million before the weekend. Its legs should propel it past $4 million, but $5 million will likely remain out of reach.
  • The Book of Henry reached $4 million before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • Paris Can Wait made it all the way to $5 million before the weekend, but that could be as far as it will go, as its theater average has gotten quite low.
  • Beatriz at Dinner reached $5 million before the weekend and nearly got to $6 million over the weekend.
  • The Big Sick continues to race past milestones hitting $6 million over the weekend. It is going to expand wide on Friday and its performance so far is a great omen.
  • The Beguiled also hit $6 million over the weekend. However, its average is low enough that it will likely start losing theaters soon.
