Friday Estimates: Kingsman Not Quite Golden with $15.33 million Opening Day

Kingsman: The Golden Circle opened on the low end of expectations with $15.33 million on Friday. This puts it on pace for just under $40 million over the full weekend. This is a little more than the $36.21 million the original managed back in 2015. This film has earned weaker reviews, but both films earned a B plus from CinemaScore. Still sequels tend to have shorter legs, so getting much past $100 million domestically will be difficult. This is not good news for a film that cost $104 million to make. I don’t think there will be a third film in the franchise, not unless it shows some growth internationally.
The Lego Ninjago Movie only managed third place with $5.8 million on Friday. This is almost identical to Storks’ $5.77 million opening day, but well below expectations. Storks also earned better reviews 64% positive to 53% positive. It also earned a better CinemaScore at A minus to B plus. This should add up to slightly lower legs, so look for an opening weekend of just under $21 million. This is barely half of the high end of expectations.
The final new release of the week was Friend Request, but the less said the better. It opened with $750,000 on Friday, putting it on pace for $2 million over the full weekend. Its 20% positive reviews won’t help its legs, neither will its C plus from CinemaScore.
Let’s go back to some positive news. It earned $9.08 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $29 million over the weekend. It won’t be long before it reaches $300 million.
Meanwhile, we have numbers for a couple of limited releases. Victoria and Abdul opened with $60,000 on Friday in just 4 theaters. It will have among the best theater average of the year. Meanwhile, Battle of the Sexes earned nearly $160,000 in 21 theaters. On the other hand, Stronger pulled in $480,000, but it was playing in nearly 600 theaters. It will avoid the Mendoza Line, but not by enough to really matter.
