Theater Averages: Victoria and Abdul’s Reign Continues with $14,184

October 4, 2017

Victoria and Abdul

Victoria and Abdul did something very few films manage to do, it repeated on top of the theater average chart. This past weekend, the film earned just over $1 million in 77 theaters for an average of $14,184. The only other film in the $10,000 club was Pearl Jam: Let’s Play Two, which earned an average of $10,635 in five theaters.

Most of the rest of the new limited releases struggled. Lucky did well with an average of $8,659 in five theaters. This is enough for it to expand somewhat, but likely not enough to earn a real measure of mainstream success. The Pathological Optimist got off to a good start for a documentary with $5,946 in its one theater. Judwaa 2 was playing in 192 theaters earning an average of $3,323. Til Death Do Us Part was playing in more theaters, 562, while earning a lower average, $2,708. Chasing the Dragon was right behind with an average of $2,661 in 52 theaters. Te Ata barely avoided the Mendoza Line with an average of $2,046 in 14 theaters.

A Question of Faith wasn’t as lucky with an average of $1,551 in 661 theaters. Bugs was next with $951 in one theater over the weekend, while it pulled in $1,473 from Wednesday through Sunday. Finally there’s Super Dark Times, which was right behind with an average of $933 in 21 theaters. However, it was also playing on Video on Demand, which is the only mitigating factor when a film opens below the Mendoza Line.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Til Death Do Us Part opened with more than $1 million, but its theater average is weak enough that it won’t go much further.
  • Victoria and Abdul earned $1 million during its second weekend of release and it has lots of room to expand.
  • Ingrid Goes West barely made it to $3 million over the weekend and that’s as far as it will go. Even so, this is a great result for a limited release.
  • Stronger got to $2 million before the weekend and hit $3 million over the weekend. On the other hand, its theater average was nearly cut in half, so it will start to lose theaters making additionally milestones harder to get to.
