2017 Awards Season: WGA Nominations

January 4, 2018

The Big Sick

The Writers Guild of America is the latest group to announce award nominees. There are a lot of categories that WGA hand out awards for, but only three of them are for theatrical releases. The list of nominees include several major Awards Season players, and not a lot of surprises. The Big Sick, Lady Bird, The Disaster Artist, Get Out, The Shape of Water… We've seen almost all of these films appear on lists of nominations before.

The categories and nominees are...

Best Original Screenplay

Best Adapted Screenplay

Best Documentary Screenplay

Notes and Reactions...

  • I’m very happy Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani earned a nomination for The Big Sick. It is my favorite film of the year, but it isn’t getting the Awards Season attention I would like.
  • For the second year in a row, there was a comic book movie on this list. This year it is Logan, while last year Deadpool got a nod. This is arguably the only real surprise on this year’s list.
  • Jane is the only documentary nominated here that also made the Oscar shortlist. It is widely expected to earn an Oscar nomination and most think it has a better than average shot at winning.
