Ex Files 3: Return of the Exes

Ex Files 3: Return of the Exes roared into first place with $86.96 million over the weekend for a 13-day total of $200.43 million. Its weekend total was double last weekend’s haul, while every other holdover at the top of the Chinese chart fell by more than 50%.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle remained in second place for the third weekend in a row. This time around it earned $68.08 million on 14,802 screens in 76 markets for totals of $279.92 million internationally and $525.52 million worldwide. The film’s biggest market was South Korea, where it earned third place with $6.01 million on 878 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $6.92 million. The film’s best new market was Brazil, where it earned first place with $5.03 million on 919 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $7.20 million. The film’s biggest market overall is the U.K., where it has accumulated $35.34 million, including $5.30 million on 899 screens this past weekend.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi slipped to third place with $64.7 million in 55 markets for totals of $632.7 million internationally and $1.205 billion worldwide. The film didn’t live up to expectations in China earning second place with just $28.14 million over the weekend for a total opening of $28.71 million. It wasn’t expected to earn first place in China, as this time of year is rough for non-Chinese films. However, most were expecting it to at least beat Rogue One’s $30.82 million opening, but that didn’t happen. That said, the film will have no trouble getting past $1.3 billion and $1.4 billion is still a realistic goal. The film could have earned half that and it still would have broken even eventually. As it is, the film was already profitable before the beginning of the new year, so it can hardly be seen as truly disappointing. We can call it the curse of great expectations.

The Greatest Showman climbed into fourth place with $24.0 million in 74 markets for totals of $74.5 million internationally and $151.4 million worldwide. The film’s biggest new market was Russia, where it earned second place with $3.11 million. Meanwhile, its biggest market overall was the U.K., where it earned $3.27 million over the weekend for a two-week total of $13.56 million.

Ferdinand rounded out the top five was with $23.3 million in 69 markets for totals of $112.8 million internationally and $183.3 million worldwide. The film’s biggest opening was in South Korea, where it earned fourth place with $1.76 million on 698 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $2.45 million. The film’s biggest market was France, where it added $4.2 million to its running tally, which now sits at $12.8 million after three weeks of release. The film is having incredible legs there, but this likely won’t be enough to break even.
