2017 Awards Season: PGA Winners

January 20, 2018

The Shape of Water

The Producers Guild of America awards were handed out last night. There are only three theatrical awards, plus a special award previously announced, and none of the results were truly surprising. In fact, two of them were completely predictable.

The categories and winners are...

Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures

Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures

Outstanding Producer of Documentary Theatrical Motion Pictures

Notes and Reactions...

  • Most of the contenders for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures were worthy of winning, but I’m glad The Shape of Water took home the top prize. I did like The Big Sick more, but I’m still happy with this choice.
  • Get Out didn’t win the big prize, but it did take home the Stanley Kramer Award for films that “illuminate provocative social issues.” It’s a good choice.
  • Coco won, in what might be the least surprising result of the year.
  • Jane also won, in what might be the second-least surprising result of the year. Both it and Coco are Oscar favorites at this point.
