Theater Averages: A Fantastic Start for Woman at $14,196

February 7, 2018

A Fantastic Woman

A Fantastic Woman was the only film to top $10,000 on the theater average chart, as it earned an average of $14,196 in five theaters. This is the best average for a new release in 2018, topping the previews high mark of $13,179, which Padmaavat set last week.

It was a slow week for new limited releases and there were only three other films that released numbers. As expected, 24 Frames: Before and After Lumiere did well, earning $8,101 in its lone theater. Before we Vanish struggled in comparison, but an average of $4,185 in two theaters isn’t a bad result for a foreign-language film. Finally there’s The Cage Fighter, which only managed an average of $602, also in two theaters. However, it is playing on VOD, so its box office numbers are immaterial.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Padmaavat hit $6 million before the weekend and $7.5 million during the weekend. It will hit $10 million shortly.
  • Hostiles has hit $20 million after seven weeks of release. Its theater average is low enough that it will lose a lot of theaters in the next two weeks, so getting much further than where it is now will be very difficult.
  • I, Tonya managed to get to $20 million just before the weekend and it is already more than halfway to $25 million.
  • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri reached $40 million over the weekend and it isn’t done yet.
  • The Shape of Water managed to get to $40 million before the weekend and was nearly at $45 million by the time the weekend ended. With its Oscar nominations and the buzz that’s generating, it should have no trouble getting further.
  • The Post surpassed $60 million before the weekend and $65 million over the weekend. It is by far the biggest limited hit of 2017.
