Infinity War Starts Faster than any MCU Film to Date (Previews and International Numbers)

Avengers: Infinity War

Infinity War was widely expected to destroy the previous MCU record for previews. Age of Ultron held the previous record at $27.6 million and Infinity War destroyed that record with $39 million. This is not only the best previews in the MCU, it is the fourth best previews of all time. Only The Force Awakens at $57 million and The Last Jedi at $45 million and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part II at $43.5 million beat it. The film’s reviews suggest it could have long legs; however, there’s also a chance the film has an Empire Strikes Back problem. It definitely feels like the second part of a trilogy for reasons I’m still not comfortable saying.

We also have international numbers for Infinity War, as the film earned $39 million in 21 markets during its first day of release on the international chart and $56 million in 43 markets on Thursday, for a two-day total of $95 million. This included a lot of industry best results. For example, the film opened in South Korea with $6.5 million, which is the new record for an opening day there. It also set the record in the Philippines ($2.7 million); Thailand ($1.8 million); Indonesia ($1.8 million); and others. It had to settle for second best all-time in Australia at $6.7 million, behind only The Force Awakens. Thursday added more records, including $4.8 million in Brazil. On the other hand, the film only managed $8.9 million during its opening day in the U.K. Granted, this is a huge number and the best in the MCU, but only the third best for Disney.

The film will continue to add markets on Friday, but doesn’t open in Russia until the 3rd of May and finishes its run in China on May 11th.
