Theater Averages: Infinity War Soars with The Seagull

May 15, 2018

Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War and The Seagull were neck-and-neck on the theater average chart with averages of $13,875 and $13,435, respectively. Boom for Real was next with an average of $11,359 in two theaters. The final film in the $10,000 club was Soller’s Point with $10,618 in one theater.

There were a number of new limited releases, many of which that did really well. The biggest limited release of the week was Nothing to Lose, opening with an average of $9,368 in 69 theaters. Always at the Carlyle was right behind with $9,209 in one theater. Champion also did very well with an average of $8,548 in two theaters. Filmworker also had a successful start with $7,984 in one theater, while fellow documentary, Mountain was next with $6,064, also in one theater.

The rest of the new limited releases struggled, to be kind. Revenge missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,241 in 37 theaters. However, it was playing on VOD and according to the studio, it was in the top ten on iTunes this past weekend. The Assassin’s Code was also playing on VOD earning an average of $935 in 12 theaters. Lu Over the Wall didn’t have VOD as an excuse, so its average of $626 in 97 theaters hurts. Finally, another VOD release, Higher Power, earned an average of $100 in three theaters.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a couple of Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Lean on Pete got to $1 million early in the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
  • Pandas topped $1 million before the weekend and its legs have been strong enough that $2 million is within reach.
  • Disobedience also got to $1 million over the weekend. Its theater average is low enough that it likely won’t expand significantly beyond this point, but it will also not lose theaters so fast that it won’t get to $2 million and maybe even $3 million.
  • RBG reached $1 million early in the weekend and $2 million late in the weekend. It will continue to expand and reach more milestones for at least a couple more weeks.
  • The Death of Stalin made it all of the way to $7.5 million before the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
