International Box Office: Dying Slumps, Still Survives in Top Spot

July 18, 2018

Dying to Survive

Dying to Survive remained in first place, both in its native China and on the international chart. It earned $69.29 million over the weekend for a total of $367.40 million after two full weeks of release.

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation rose to second place with $42.90 million on 13,800 screens in 60 markets for a still early international total of $53.60 million. The film’s best new opening was Mexico, where it earned first place with $7.17 million on 3,456 screens. It also had multi-million dollar openings in Russia ($5.86 million on 1,901); Brazil ($3.74 million on 1,228); Spain ($2.83 million on 867); and Argentina ($2.12 million on 432). Its best holdover was Australia, where it earned $2.40 million on 314 screens for a three-week total of $10.24 million.

Hidden Man opened in second place in China and third place internationally with $46.61 million over the weekend.

Skyscraper debuted in fourth place with $40.0 million in 57 markets. It was a hit in some markets. For example, it earned $3.67 million on 812 screens over the weekend for a total opening of $4.75 million in South Korea. This was enough for second place behind Ant-Man and the Wasp. It also opened in second place in Mexico, this time behind Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, earning $3.79 million on 817 screens, and in Russia with $2.72 million on 1,353, again behind Summer Vacation. On the other hand, it really struggled in the U.K. with just $2.20 million on 497 screens. That’s less than a $12 million opening here, relatively speaking.

Ant-Man and the Wasp fell from second place to fifth with $35.3 million in 44 markets for a two-week total of $150.9 million internationally and $284.0 million worldwide. The film’s only new major market was India, where it earned $3.8 million, which is more than the original Ant-Man earned in that market in total.

Incredibles 2 just missed the top five, but it was really close behind with $33.3 million in 43 markets for totals of $321.1 million internationally and $857.0 million worldwide. The film opened in first place in the U.K. with $12.75 million in 664 theaters, which is the second biggest Pixar release in that market, behind only Toy Story 3. Even if the film had no new markets left to open in, it would still likely hit $1 billion worldwide. However, it still has openings in South Korea, Japan, Spain, Italy, and Germany yet to come.

We have a special extended edition of the international top five, as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom opened in its final market, Japan, earning $13.42 million in 375 theaters. This is the biggest opening ever for a Universal film in that market. Overall, the film earned $28.0 million in 69 markets, for totals of $773.1 million internationally and $1.137 billion worldwide.
