Friday Estimates: The Rich Keep Getting Richer

August 25, 2018

Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians is this year’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard, at least in terms of legs. The film fell just 4% from its opening Friday earning $7.0 million on this Friday. The film was a Wednesday opening, so it likely won’t perform better on Saturday compared to last weekend, but the film will still earn about $23 million over the weekend. The book Crazy Rich Asians is based on is the first in a trilogy and I would be amazed if Warner Bros. hasn’t already begun work on the next two installments.

The Happytime Murders opened in second place with $3.95 million on Friday, but that’s not enough to stay in second place for long. The film is earning terrible reviews and only managed a C minus from CinemaScore, so its legs will likely be really short. It might not even get to $10 million over the full weekend as a result.

The Meg was right behind $3.3 million on Friday, giving it a total of $95.6 million after 15 days of release. It should get to $100 million domestically today, making it Warner Bros.’ third such hit of the year.

Mission: Impossible—Fallout added another $2.3 million on Friday and is expected to earn about $7.5 million over the weekend. This will put it a week away from getting to $200 million domestically.

A.X.L. will match its low, low expectations, more or less. It only managed $1.02 million on Friday so it will finish with close to $3 million over the weekend. The film earned awful reviews, but managed a B plus from CinemaScore. That said, it is opening below the Mendoza Line, so its word-of-mouth won’t be able to have an effect before theater owners drop the movie.

That film is still doing better than Beautifully Broken did. This film earned $231,000 in just over 650 theaters and will likely finish with a theater average of under $1,000. The film only has two reviews and it is too small for a CinemaScore. Regardless, its theater average will kill its legs before word-of-mouth can have an effect.
