Weekend Estimates: Labor Monday Update

September 3, 2018

Crazy Rich Asians

We have some Monday morning updates for the weekend box office and as expected, Crazy Rich Asians continued to dominate at the box office. It earned $6.21 million on Monday for a four-day total of $28.31 million and a three-week total of $117.04 million. It became just the fourth film released by Warner Bros. this year to get to the century mark and it will quickly become the studio’s biggest hit of the year so far, as it will overtake Ocean’s 8 shortly.

The Meg is currently the third biggest hit released by Warner Bros. this year. It earned $2.91 million on Monday for a four-day total of $13.45 million. Its running tally now sits at $123.43 million and it should eventually catch up to Ocean’s 8; however, Crazy Rich Asians will get there first.

There were no major updates for Mission: Impossible—Fallout, as it remained in third place with $7.04 million / $9.05 million over the weekend for a total of $206.40 million after six weeks of release. The fact that it remained in the top five for six weeks is both impressive and a condemnation of the competition it has had since its debut.

Operation Finale managed $6.02 million / $7.81 million over the weekend for a six-day total of $9.53 million. Its reviews and A minus rating from CinemaScore should help its word-of-mouth, but its theater average is low enough that even a good hold next weekend won’t help it stick around in theaters for very long.

Searching’s semi-wide expansion went as expected with $5.70 million / $7.28 million over the weekend for a total of $7.79 million, including its limited release run. I don’t think its average is enough for significant expansion, but it is also not low enough that it will be losing theaters right away. This is especially true if its reviews turn into strong word-of-mouth.

Kin earned a tiny bit less than Sunday’s estimates with $3.0 million / $3.66 million over the weekend. It missed the Mendoza Line, even over the four-day weekend.

Ya Veremos Monday update is nearly identical as yesterday’s estimate at $2.27 million over four days in 369 theaters. The Little Stranger fell even further down to $478,000 in 474.
