Friday Estimates: The Nun Breaks its Vow of Poverty with $22.37 million

The Nun is crushing expectations with a $22.37 million opening Friday haul. I wasn’t expecting it to top $20 million on Friday, so this is great news. On the other hand, its reviews have continued to fall and are now at just 29% positive. Meanwhile, it only managed a C from CinemaScore, which is the worst in the franchise by far. (The two Conjuring movies both earned A minus, while the two Annabelle movies each earned a B score.) That said, this isn’t terrible for a horror movie and even terrible legs won’t put a damper on this debut, so Warner Bros. must be ecstatic about this result.
Peppermint opened in second place with $4.65 million on Friday, but it won’t stay there for long. Like the above movie, the reviews have fallen from where they were before its release, but it didn’t start as high, so its landed at just 14% positive. Its CinemaScore rating was a B plus, which is fine. It’s not good. It’s not bad. It’s just fine. Look for a third place, $12 million debut over the weekend, which isn’t bad for a film that reportedly cost about $25 million to make.
Crazy Rich Asians slipped to third place on Friday with $3.83 million. This should be enough to climb into second place tomorrow and earn about $14 million over the weekend, matching our prediction.
The Meg was the third Warner Bros. movie in the top four earning $1.35 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $5 million over the weekend. This should be a bigger story and it likely would be, if it weren’t for Disney’s record-breaking run in the first half of the year.
God Bless the Broken Road is expected to earn $1.5 million, not on Friday, over the full weekend. Its Friday number was just $493,000. The reviews haven’t got any better and are tied with Peppermint at just 14% positive. (Its release was too small to get a CinemaScore rating.) Theater owners will be looking at that theater average and dropping this film as soon as they are contractually able to.
