Theater Averages: Venom is the Toast of the Town

October 10, 2018

Venom

The overall box office leader, Venom, was also the top film on the theater average chart earning an average of $18,884. Studio 54 was yet another documentary success story opening with $14,909 in its lone theater. The only holdover in the $10,000 club was Free Solo with an average of $13,726 in 41 theaters and by the end of Sunday, it was nearly at $1 million. The Hate U Give was close behind with an average of $13,336 in 36 theaters. Finally, A Star is Born was the last film in the $10,000 club, earning an average of $12,373 in wide release.

None of the rest of the new limited releases were able to come close to the $10,000 club. The best of the rest was Moynihan, which earned $4,416 in its one theater over the weekend and $7,983 from Wednesday through Sunday. This is a fine opening for a limited release. The Great Buster struggled earning an average of $3,617 in two theaters, but at least it didn’t miss the Mendoza Line, like the next three films did. As expected, Loving Pablo bombed with an average of $1,104 in 15 theaters. Heavy Trip was even worse with an average of $339 in 16 theaters. Shine was right behind, and I mean right behind, as in 69 cents behind, with an average of $338 in 609 theaters. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a race this close on the theater average chart before.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • Little Women reached $1 million very early in the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go. This is a terrible run for a film that opened in 643 theaters.
  • Mandy also got to $1 million over the weekend and it too won’t go any further. That said, $1 million isn’t a bad result for a film this weird and it has a real shot at becoming a cult classic on the home market.
  • Colette was the third film to hit $1 million over the weekend, but unlike the first two, it should have no trouble getting to $2 million before long.
  • Puzzle made it to $2 million over the weekend, but that’s as far as it will go.
