Friday Estimates: Halloween Laps Competition with $10 million on Friday

October 27, 2018

Halloween

As expected, Halloween earned first place on Friday. It was a little weaker than expected at $10.02 million and Universal’s estimate for the weekend is $30.05 million, compared to our prediction of $33 million. A $30 million sophomore stint is still fantastic for a film that cost just $10 million to make; in fact, it cracked $100 million domestically on Friday, which is more than enough to pay for its combined production / advertising budgets.

A Star is Born added $4.19 million on Friday and industry tracking has it topping our prediction with just over $14 million over the full weekend. The film could get to $200 million, if it earns a lot of major Awards Season nominations and Warner Bros. gives it a boost to get it over the top. Even if it doesn’t get there, it will still be a massive financial success.

Venom earned $2.87 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $10.20 million over the weekend. This is a hair lower than our $11 million prediction, but close enough call it a victory.

Hunter Killer’s Friday isn’t as good as its previews suggested and are much more in line with our predictions at $2.55 million putting it on pace for just over $7 million this weekend. Its reviews are weak, but it did earn an A minus from CinemaScore, so its target audience did like it more than critics did. That said, theater owners will have the final say and I don’t think many will want to keep the film around as the holiday season begins next week.

Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween matched our predictions perfectly with $1.80 million on Friday, putting it on pace for $6.9 million over the weekend. There’s not much more that needs to be said.

Mid90s’ expansion isn’t going terribly well. It only managed $1.31 million in just over 1,200 theaters on Friday. This will be enough to earn a spot in the top ten, but not enough to encourage additional theater owners to book the film. In fact, it will likely start losing theaters shortly.

As expected, Indivisible will miss the top ten, as it opened in 11th place with $605,000 in 830 theaters on Friday. In fact, it will likely miss the Mendoza Line with $1.5 million over the weekend.

Johnny English Strikes Again will be marginally better on the theater average chart, but it is only playing in just over 500 theaters earning $515,000 on Friday.

Both of those were blockbusters compared to London Fields, a film that earned just $57,000 in over 600 theaters on Friday.
