Friday Estimates: Grinch Steals Top Spot, but Doesn’t have Incredible Start

Dr Seuss’ The Grinch debuted in first place on Friday with $18.67 million. This is not quite as good as we were originally expecting, but better than its previews would indicate. This is good news for the film’s long term chances. Its reviews having fallen below the overall positive level. It did earn an A minus from CinemaScore, which is good for a family film, but not great. Universal expects the film to earn $67 million over the weekend, which is close enough to our $68 million prediction to be a success. It is also very close to its $75 million production budget.
Bohemian Rhapsody was next with $8.47 million. This is a better than anticipated hold and should give it $28 million over the weekend and nearly $100 million by the end of Sunday.
Overlord opened with $3.8 million on Friday. The film’s reviews are 81% positive, while it managed a B from CinemaScore. A CinemaScore of B wouldn’t be a good result for most movies, but it is better than average for a horror film. Paramount is expecting $9 million over the weekend after this result. This is a little weaker than our prediction, but not a disaster.
The Girl in the Spider’s Web is closer to a disaster. It only managed $3.0 million on Friday, while its reviews have fallen to just 44% positive and it only managed a B from CinemaScore. While a B is relatively good for a horror film like Overlord, its terrible for a thriller like this and it likely won’t have good legs. Look for between $8 million and $9 million over the weekend.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms was pushed to fifth place on Friday with $2.37 million, putting it on pace for between $9 million and $10 million over the weekend.
We don’t have official numbers yet, but studio estimates have The Front Runner earning an average of $10,000 on the theater average chart over the weekend. That’s not enough to justify a truly wide expansion.
