2018 - Awards Season: BAFTA - Winners

February 11, 2019

The Favorite

The BAFTA winners were announced and The Favorite led the way with 7 wins. Like I mentioned before, understandably, the BAFTAs tend to favor British films and this can lessen their ability to predict Oscar winners and The Favorite is such a British Film that they managed to spell the word correctly. That doesn’t mean there are no lessons we can learn from these results.

Notes and Reactions...

  • Roma won four awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, so its chances of winning the Best Picture Oscar just went way up.
  • The Favourite won seven awards, including both Best Lead Actress and Best Supporting Actress. However, while I think the film will win multiple Oscars, I don’t think it will be a major player on Oscar night.
  • Free Solo beating RBG for Best Documentary could be an omen for Oscar night. Or it could be a sign that RBG is too American for BAFTA voters, while Free Solo is more universal in its appeal.
  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse continued its winning streak over the weekend.
  • The only other film to win more than one award was Bohemian Rhapsody, which won for Best Lead Actor (Rami Malek) and Best Sound.
  • Black Panther only got one nomination, but it did win for Best Visual Effects. One could argue Letitia Wright’s win for Rising Star should also be credited to Black Panther.
  • A Star is Born won for Best Original Music, meaning Lady Gaga became the first woman to win in this category in the history of the BAFTAs. I find it shocking that it took this long for a woman to win in this category.
