Theater Averages: Dumbo is Lonely at the Top

April 4, 2019

Dumbo

Dumbo was the only film in the $10,000 Club at the weekend, as it earned an average of $10,798 while earning first place on the overall chart. The best limited release was Diane, which earned an average of $8,156 in three theaters.

There were not many other new limited releases to talk about. The Chaperone opened with an average of $6,075 in two theaters. The Brink was the only other film to avoid the Mendoza Line with an average of $4,516 in four theaters. Working Women missed the Mendoza Line with an average of $1,938 in two theaters over the weekend; however, there were mitigating circumstances, as it opened on Wednesday and its five-day average was $4,616. Neither Screwball nor Zen for Nothing had that excuse and both missed the Mendoza Line by huge margins with averages of $661 and $634 respectively.

This past week also saw milestones reached for a few Per Theater Chart alumni:

  • The Mustang just reached $1 million late in the weekend. It does have a chance of expanding further, which would obviously help its chances of reaching more milestones.
  • Hotel Mumbai earned $3 million over the weekend, getting to the $3 million milestone in the process. It will get to further milestones, even if it doesn’t expand significantly beyond this point.
  • Gloria Bell reached $4 million over the weekend, but its theater count is going to drop dramatically from now on and that will hurt its chances of getting past $5 million.
  • Apollo 11 topped $7.5 million over the weekend and getting to $10 million isn’t out of the question.
  • No Manches Frida 2 also made it to $7.5 million over the weekend. It will start losing theaters at an accelerated pace, but it could still last long enough to get to $10 million.
