Home Market Releases for April 23rd, 2019

A Face in the Crowd

It is another slow week on the home market, but that gave me a chance to complete a couple of late reviews. The best release on this week’s list is A Face in the Crowd and it is the Pick of the Week. However, both of the late reviews, On the Basis of Sex and Willie Dynamite, are worth picking up.

Alien - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
One of the best movies ever made and it absolutely should be in everyone’s collection. On the other hand, it has been released on the home market more times that I can remember, meaning fans of the movie likely already own it several times. It is coming out on 4K this week, but even that’s not enough to lift it to a Pick of the Week contender. If you don’t own it yet and you have a 4K system, then now is the time to buy it.

Captain America 4K Double-Shot
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Captain America: Civil War - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack
Video on Demand
The two Russo Brothers Captain America movies are hitting 4K just in time for Endgame. Both films are Pick of the Week contenders; however, I’m betting there’s going to be a 4K box set coming out relatively soon, so I would wait for that.

Destroyer - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
Busted Oscar-bait. It’s a good movie, but it wasn’t good enough to truly thrive in limited release and it certainly isn’t great enough to win many awards. That said, it is worth checking out and with two audio commentary tracks and a making of featurette, it is worth picking up.

Escape Room - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray Combo Pack
Video on Demand
A low-budget horror film that earned mixed reviews but was a strong performer at the box office. It is worth checking out for fans of the genre. However, the extras are a little light for a wide release with some deleted / alternative scenes, as well as a trio of featurettes, so it is limited to a rental.

A Face in the Crowd: The Criterion Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Andy Griffith stars as Larry “Lonesome” Rhodes, a singer plucked out of a jail cell and put on TV. His fame grows exponentially, but this is too fast for his ego to handle. It’s an absolutely amazing film and one that needs to be seen by more. Extras include a couple of new interviews, as well as archival extras including a documentary on the movie. It is easily worth picking up and a contender for Pick of the Week.

I Spit on Your Grave: Déjà Vu - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
A sequel to the infamous rape-revenge flick from the late 1970s. It is selling surprisingly well, all things considered. Also coming out this week is the original on DVD, as well as a documentary about the film’s legacy.

Noir Archive: 9-Film Collection : Volume 1: 1944-1954 - No Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray Combo Pack
9 lessor known entries in the Film Noir genre from 1944 through 1954. There are no extras, but that’s not surprising due to their age and lack of name recognition. The price-per-film is under $6, so it is still worth picking up.

On the Basis of Sex - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
This film is busted Oscar-bait. It’s clear from its subject matter and its release date it was aiming to win major awards. That didn’t happen, but is it still worth checking out? Does it have more mainstream appeal? Read our review to find out.

A Place to Call Home: Season Six - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
The sixth and final season of this Australia TV drama. The price-per-minute is very high compared to most TV on DVD releases, but that’s common for imports like this. Also coming out today is the Complete Series Box Set, which is not a huge saving.

Please Teacher! Complete Collection - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Kei is an 18-year old student who is just starting high school, because when he was younger, he lapsed into a coma and lost three years of his life. His teacher, Mizuho, is an alien and when Kei finds out, he’s forced to marry her, because Anime. The reviews on My Anime List are rather good, but that is a rather silly setup.

Shameless: Season Nine - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD or Blu-ray
Video on Demand
The last season of this show with Emmy Rossum, which is too bad, as I always thought she was the best part of the show.

Tickled - Reviews - Buy from Amazon: DVD
Video on Demand
A journalist stumbles upon the world of endurance tickling... that’s not the weirdest part of the story. When he decides to investigate, he uncovers something much stranger. Something that I’m not going to describe, because you need to encounter this movie for yourself.

Willie Dynamite: Special Edition - Buy from Amazon: Blu-ray
Gordon from Sesame Street stars as a pimp in this 1970s Blaxploitation film. That should be enough to get your attention. However, is the film good enough to be worth picking up? Check out our review for my opinion.
